"Gifting"

I'm noticing this being used a lot on FB recently, mainly on freebie type pages in the context of "is anyone gifting a flat screen tv / 3 piece suite in black leather / pram with footmuff ?" (Often with the caveat that the item should preferably be new and the "gifter" must also be able to deliver). Normal posts are more along the lines of 'if anyone is getting rid of a fridge, please let me know, mines broken , I'll take anything in decent condition that will fit in the space, will arrange man with van'

Is it me or is it CF terminology? It really grates on me and I don't really know why. Is it because they feel cheeky asking and it makes them feel better that someone might like to give them a gift? Is it just commonly used on these sites and people think it sounds politer? Or is it supposed to make you more inclined to part with stuff?

Yeah it's basically a way of saying they want something but don't want to pay for it.

It's on here all the time, sets my teeth on edge.

Partly it's an Americanism, people are watching US stuff online. And partly it sounds nicer than 'given' IE my parents have given me xyz, it's its a present you sound less like a freeloader!

I saw someone yesterday asking for baby items as she was pregnant and had nothing. She put the area that she lived. Lots of kind people were offering all kinds of things - prams, baths, bags of clothes and bedding. She replied to them all asking if they could deliver, some of these were within a five minute walk of her. It is the height of cheeky fuckery. If you’re going to ask for something for free (and I understand people fall on hard times and need help) you can at least get off your backside and collect it.
