Taking 7 year old to see Wicked Movie?

I wanted to take DD (7.5) to the cinema today as DH and DS are going to a football game. I went to select Paddington but it's sold out and she's seeing Moana next week as part of a trip. Only other suitable film is Wicked but is it 'appropriate' for her age? I know there's nothing inappropriate, but would children that age enjoy it? I know it's quite long too so I just wondered if anyone took their DC of a similar age and did they stay/enjoy it? Thanks.

I have a nearly 7 year old and I wouldn’t take him to see it. I don’t know that there is anything that would be inappropriate, but I think he would just be bored as it’s more of an adult film than a kids one and I think the plot would a bit go over their heads. Could you not travel further for Paddington?

GrumpyCactus · 30/11/2024 08:57

I wouldn't. I know two people who have taken 8 year olds and both didn't enjoy it. It's VERY long and it's the sort of film where knowing what happens would be beneficial. I would think it was a waste of money in all honesty.

Common Sense Media is my go to resource for film information. They suggest Wicked is appropriate for 10+

It’s about 2 and a half hours long so it may be a bit too long

Shiremum40 · 30/11/2024 09:09

We went with a group of 9-year-olds who loved it. I think the issue with a 7-year-old would be the length of the film. It's a pretty easy plot to follow and I don't think my 7-year-old would find it scary.

It depends on your child.

RuLu · 30/11/2024 09:11

My (nearly 8 year old) loved it. I was sceptical as she doesn't sit still but she was glued to it & barely even wriggled! I'd go! Take snacks!

JussathoB · 30/11/2024 09:13

I know it’s not quite the same but maybe you could enjoy watching a film on the TV together?

usernother · 30/11/2024 09:24

No, it's definitely not appropriate. Do something else.

purplespink · 30/11/2024 10:00

Thanks everyone, we're going to do something else instead. Think I saved £20 and 3 hours of my life thanks to this thread 😂☺️

I saw it last night. Loved it. However, it's 2 hours 40 minutes long. The few younger children in my screening didn't have the attention span to sit through it well. It's also not really a 'kiddie' movie although nothing inappropriate.

Watercoloursky · 30/11/2024 10:43

It's long - when I went to see it, there were small children wandering up and down the aisles when they had obviously lost interest. There's a bit with the flying monkeys that might be a bit scary for sensitive young'uns, but as PP have said, nothing inappropriate in terms of adult content. The singing is lovely, though... it will come down to attention span, I think!

I know this post is late, but I hope you get a chance to read it. I wish more comments on your thread were of mom's that actually watched the movie with their kids. The moms that did watch it with their kiddos enjoyed it, and so did the kids. I watched it today with my 4 year old and 8 year old. The four year old loved it. We just did not let him see the monkey scene to not startle him, especially in a loud theater. My 8 year old, who I thought would have wanted to get up, or leave because she is usually somewhat restless sat through the whole movie! Did not even ask to go to the bathroom. The monkey scene was fine for her. I don't like musicals and I really enjoyed the movie. The songs were also fun, short and intertaining. The director did a wonderful job in intertwining the songs in a way thay seemed less heavy on the songs. I hope you hear out the mom's that have taken their kids to watch wicked :). Suggestion, show her the preview, and if she seems interested or wants to go, you should both go. You will most likely LOVE IT!

Wicked is heading to Sky tv very soon, so anyone wanting to watch it in the cinema should go soon .

babasaclover · 28/12/2024 09:26

It's 3 hours 5 mins long - is your child good with sitting still for that long? Plus 20 mins advert. My 8 year old isn't so I'm going to wait till it comes to sky

Mynewnameis · 28/12/2024 09:28

My 8.5 yo loved it. She's used to long shows though.

MuggleMe · 28/12/2024 09:31

My 7yo was fine until the last half hour, she's very sensitive and didn't like people being 'mean to the witch' and was a bit done by then. I wouldn't have taken her by herself but her 10yo sister was keen to see it.

Enterthedragonqueen · 28/12/2024 09:31

It's nearly 4 hours long and a bit too complex storyline for a 7 yr old to follow properly.

Never mind the dc, I couldn't sit that long and not get a bit fed up. Far better in the comfort of my home so looking forward to when it comes out

babasaclover · 28/12/2024 10:10

@liveforsummer yes I'm with you there. It's ridiculous really! Well likely watch over a few nights

PicturePlace · 28/12/2024 10:11

My 6 year old boy loved it.
