Holidaying abroad vs UK. The PRICE difference

I booked to go abroad (Tenerife) for five days with my DH In January for a bit of winter sun. For the two of us for five days it cost less than £500. Ok not a five star all inclusive but I don't enjoy all inclusive anyway. Including flights

I also Booked TWO nights in Edinburgh between Christmas and new year (not over new year!) (DH is in port during his 3 months away) and just for the hotel alone it was £350!

I will drive, it will take me about 8 hours. But the flights on top were another £300! Just for one person as DH is already up there.

Genuinely shocked me!

It's low season in Tenerife and high season in Edinburgh. You'd have to do like for like to really compare.

coxesorangepippin · 30/11/2024 02:14

I don't blame you for going to Tenerife!

FeistyFrankie · 30/11/2024 02:30

Edinburgh is an expensive city to visit, but regardless those prices are still crazy!

Bigredcombine · 30/11/2024 02:40

I know this isn't the point of your post but have you looked at a travel together railcard? It makes train travel much cheaper if you're going to get good use out of it and might have been cheaper than flights to Edinburgh.

Good luck driving in Edinburgh 😬

kiwiane · 30/11/2024 04:00

They are very different places - I would pay for your flight to Edinburgh rather than drive for 8 hours alone in midwinter.

CRbear · 30/11/2024 04:09

I agree! I never understand why anyone would pay for centreparcs rather than go abroad - it’s never cheaper!

Spirallingdownwards · 30/11/2024 05:14

I would prefer to pay twice as much to go to Edinburgh than Tenerife but each to their own.

As another poster said though you should compare high season vs Hugh season rather than high vs low.

Edinburgh is expensive at any time and that is a peak season. I flew there and back from another UK airport with Ryanair recently for £40 so it might be worth checking out any other airports you can get to.

CeeJay81 · 30/11/2024 05:25

Yep. It can be very cheap to go abroad these days if your not really choosy on dates etc. Me and my work mate are going on a European city break next year. We have got flights for both of us, there and back for a grand total of £156😁. OK it's ryanair but it's barely a 2 hour flight, so who cares lol. Uk cities are often expensive.

UK hotel prices are crazy for generally poor quality, a few years ago I planned to go to the Lakes for a week but on looking at the prices ended up in Spain n a 5 star hotel paying what I'd pay for a 3 star in the rainy UK

8 of us have had a lodge Fri-Mon last weekend of our school summer holidays for £1300 the last 2 years. I'm not sure where we could travel to abroad for 3 nights for just over £150 each for travel and self catering accommodation.

We pay about £1k for a 2 bedroom cottage for 10 nights in July / August 10 minutes walk from the beach, in SE England (get a few hundred off as we have been several times now). Probably spend about the same in shopping / eating out / treats.

Versus approx £7k (AI) for 10 nights at a similar time of year in a semi decent hotel (4*)

I know a self catering cottage versus AI isn't quite like for like but even SC we are looking at a difference of £3k!!!

We do get the cottage at a good rate, it is a bit small for us (oldest sleeps on sofa bed!) but it's much more affordable for us.
