We've had dodgy lap tops for years. Does anyone think 1 grand is worth it?
I don't know much about it all but I do love photos and videos and heard you can edit these on apple mac easily?
Dh is very much against apple products and we have never had apple phones etc.

I'm just looking at Which? laptop reviews.

Their highest scoring Windows laptop is a Microsoft 13.8-inch Surface Laptop 7 (£899)

"This is the best Windows laptop we’ve ever tested. Fantastically fast with a great screen and excellent battery life, this laptop is now up to the standard of Apple’s very best MacBooks. It’s an easy Best Buy."

To be fair, most of their highest scoring laptops are Apple, but the best scoring Windows laptops are Microsoft.

I just don't like Apple as I don't use any Apple products, and some of the keys are different on the Macbook keyboard compared to a Windows keyboard. I use a Windows laptop for work anyway.

Ok to get a decent non apple how much do I need to spend

I only use Apple but DH doesn't use them, he got a Dell Laptop about 4 years ago for about £1600 which he does a lot of photo stuff on.

Yes a grand is worth it for a hugely enjoyable to use machine that's intuitive, durable, stylish and reliable. My 2012 MacBook Pro is still in good shape despite not being able to update for a few years and is a bit slow,. I remember feeling after one year that I already had my money's worth (£1.3K) because it was so damn good in every way.

But I wanted a faster Mac with more features and that was a bit lighter to carry, so a few months ago I bought a MacBook Air M3 and that is just a joy to use.

I bought an iMac in 2011 and up until 2022 it was still working as normal. I put it in my teenagers room and he managed to kill it off with a permanent black screen inside 6 months. Lost all my creative work. He still denies it. Little shit

I have had iPhones, iPads and lots of other i- things. BUT I cannot stand Mac laptops. My husband, on the other hand, would cut off his own leg rather than use a windows laptop.

My child is doing a degree and has been instructed not to get a mac as the graphics and design software they need is not compatible.

So I’d have a look at what software you plan to use, then see if you can have a go with a mac and find out if you like it. It’s pretty much down to personal taste.

I love my Mac! I have to use windows based computers at work and they're so glitchy in comparison. Definitely worth the money. They just WORK.

@Totallymessed I second the Dell XPS 13 recommendation. My current one is 8 years old, and is DD's Christmas present! (After I have reformatted of course)
It still runs perfectly fine, the battery is in good shape and it is SO light.
Although I did treat myself to the XPS 14 this time because I needed a beefier graphics card than is in the 13. It is heavier than a 13 though so if you prefer lighter models and don't need the extra graphics oomph then consider the smaller one.

To be fair, Which? really rate Apple laptops. I don't. I just dislike the layout of the keyboard and having to remember that the command key is the same as control key on a Windows laptop and other minor niggles. I have a Windows laptop for work and prefer to stick with the same layout and operating systems.

None of us have an iPhone either.

RedRiverShore5 · 01/12/2024 07:48

DH bought this in 2019, it cost £1649, he is still using it now and has been happy with it,

Dell XPS 15-9570 Laptop, Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti, 512GB

I see others on this thread have recommended Dell XPS laptops.

I have an iMac M4 and my photos do look lovely on it but I don't do much editing though the capability is probably there. You need to research exactly what sort of editing you want to do and buy accordingly, that's what DH did but I would expect to have to pay at least £1k whether it's Apple or Microsoft. I think you also need more ram for lots of editing, some laptops only have 8, 16 would probably be minimum which of course bumps the price up

This is the same windows laptop I bought recently - MS Surface 7 laptop and it is ace. I paid more like £1200 for it though as that reviewed one is the lowest spec. I've got the 16GB RAM 512GB elite disk storage one with the Elite processor. Side by side with my work (midrange, Inspiron, not XPS) Dell it looks much better and is faster, with no fan noise. I never really liked MS surface laptops before but this one is great and really has a similar feel when using it to my 5y old Mac Book Pro (given to one of my kids for uni, I don't actually use 3 laptops 😁). I really rate this laptop like Which does (check ARM 64 software compatibility if you use any unusual software though, I havent had any issues so far).

If you are in London the Microsoft store at Oxford Circus as you come out of the tube is quite good to try them out, and Currys have them too, near the Macbook Airs for a direct comparison.

I imagine a high end DELL XPS or the top range ASUS or ACER laptops would also be impressive. As others have said, a lot of the perception of windows vs mac is actually 'average mid range win 10 laptop they make me use at work which costs about £600' vs £1400+ apple laptop. You actually 'only' have to spend £1200 on a top range win 11 laptop for it to be comparable to a £1400 mac book, in terms of feel and performance. Which keys you have to use to do things is then just preference/familiarity.

Battlerope · 01/12/2024 21:00

I have a new Surface Pro which is excellent.

However, I am travelling abroad for a month over Christmas and I’m borrowing my husband’s Dell XPS13 because it’s smaller and lighter.
