How to split this room ? Floor plan

DD wants to split the large bedroom into 2. For her children. It need to be a proper partition. So not kalax units curtains spits etc.

It would be a shared window so the wall will be so they get some window each. One will have the main light the other will have lamps/floor lights/led light .

We were hoping they could have completely separate doors to each split room. But im not sure how that could work. So hoping for some ideas . If not then we will just do the partition and the older one can cut through the younger ones room to get to his .

This is a council home so can't knock down walls. But dd is allowed to put up a partition.

Is there any point having a proper partition when it will have to be open at the window end?

FrannyScraps · 29/11/2024 20:45

Surely just chop it in half down the middle? Door at the top, window at the bottom.

Were you looking for a more complex solution?

heldinadream · 29/11/2024 20:47

The only way they can each have their own doors is to build a narrow corridor along the top of the room with doors into each bedroom. So loss of space, but gain of privacy and separation.

Marblesbackagain · 29/11/2024 20:50

It really depends on what is permitted a common window means very limited privacy.

You could well fall foul of building regulations and fire exits, I don’t know all the ins and out but I don’t think you can have a bedroom off a bedroom as that is a much higher fire risk.

Not sure how you would do a proper partition with a shared window - how is that going to work?

It won't be open at the window end we will put the partition right up to the window. By sitting some of the partition on the window sill. Maybe a couple of mm of so its not actually touching the glass /window

Is your DD on her own? Does it matter if she has a large bedroom (assuming that in the evenings she makes use of downstairs space).

If you can put a partition up to the window with a door to the far half of the larger bedroom could one DC have that half and the other DC have the other bedroom? DD's room would then be the 'walkthrough' room.

No idea how that works with fire/building regs etc.

Ambleen · 29/11/2024 20:55

Please ensure both sides of the partition can open and escape from the window. We have been told by our window installers a means of escape by a window is a legal requirement.

Yeah I work in construction draw plans and layouts etc. you can’t have a room within a room for fire regulations. You’d either need a separate access or no door which I guess defeats the point.

KnickerlessParsons · 29/11/2024 20:59

I don't think it would be legal either.

mathanxiety · 29/11/2024 21:07

Rehang the door so it opens the other way (i.e. against the wall).

Put in a partition that divides the room in two, with a door leading to the new second room. You could put in a temporary screen in the 'old' bedroom to screen off a short passage for access to the new door.

Ideally it would have been better for her 7 year old to have the actual smaller room. And for the larger one to be split and dd to have one of the half's. But once split the rooms would be approx 9ft 11 by 7.5 ft. I don't think it would be enough room for her bed and bits .

If you can move the doorway, you could do something like this (excuse the poor drawing)

How will the window open? How could it be used as a means of rescue?
maybe the window could be replaced so two separate sections?

WhereTheDevilAreMySlippers · 29/11/2024 21:16

We did something similar. We changed the window so each smaller room had an opening window.
I've drawn on your floor plan what we did with our master bedroom…

The partition went right up to the central bar of the window. It was built over the radiator so each room had half of the radiator and the partition lined so there was no heating up/fire risk.

It’s worked very well for us. The dc sometimes moaned about having small rooms, but when given the option to share again they were miraculously happy with them!

What about radiator?

Mindyourfunkybusiness · 29/11/2024 21:21

Could you make two doors? I've had doors moved in the current property I'm in - not by choice my DF was clearly bloody bored when he was here during summer holidays 😂 I legit didn't know doors could be moved

And ignore my lack of door drawing skills. Obviously make them open the correct way 😂

Samphire44 · 29/11/2024 21:24

I would just do a 3 quarters partition from the top leaving a door sized opening clear at the window end. You could then hang a curtain here for privacy and would not need to build up to the window.

That can't be done it's council. The partition would go to the middle if the window. Which does not open any. But they would both have a window that opens.

For new window installations, not for old windows.

There will be window that opens each side of the partition.

All the comments about fire regulations are doing my head in. I already said we are allowed to split it. And there will be a window that opens in each side of the room.

Did this when my girls were small in a 2 bed house. Partition wall went to the window, it didn't go all the way to the door. Original door was removed and each room had a smaller than average door fitted on the diagonal to meet the wall.

I'm the room we had Wall units fitted high up to make the most of space.
