Loved the 'Call the Midwife' books - any similar recommendations?

I have today finished the Call the Midwife books and loved every second of it! I haven't read for pleasure in years and would love similar book recommendations.

I'm not really into fiction books but I love modern(ish) history and really enjoyed the medical element to this series. I also enjoyed the fact that these seem to be short stories with a continuous theme, I spend a lot of time reading at work and at uni so I could do with something easily digestible!

The Twopence To Cross The Mersey series isn't medical, but it’s a true story about a young girl in the roaring 20’s who goes from riches in the south to poverty in Liverpool. How her and her siblings survived I’ll never know, and I just want to slap her parents for being so stupid and selfish. The seres goes through WW2, and there’s lots of history in there.

Virgina How's book on her midwifery journey.

If you like medical memoirs then Unnatural Causes (by forensic pathologist Dr Richard Shepherd) is excellent but you'll need a strong stomach.

The Prison Doctor also looks good although I haven't read it yet.

Oh some brilliant suggestions, thank you all! I think I will try to have all of them so I always have one in reserve Smile

I have actually read the prison doctor and that was a brilliant read, very similar to the CTM books the way each chapter is a different story.

Thanks again, I have some time off between Christmas and new year so I have given DH your recommendations, he is also going to get me a reading light and a new set of comfy PJs too. I honestly can't wait!

Old school, but the James Herriot books might also suit you if you’ve never read them before.

Gervase Phinn books are lovely to read. They’re about his times as a School Inspector in the Yorkshire Dales. Gentle heart warming stories.
