Gall bladder diet tips!!

creamsnugjumper · 29/11/2024 18:00

I have a grumbling flared up gall bladder, GP appt next week as the pain under my rib is lingering for more than a week, I know I have stones from a previous scan.

Online I can find plenty of "what not to eat" but not every much of what I should be eating.

I'm sat thinking right what can I make for my tea, lunches, dinners for the next few days. And basically keep coming back to the diet I put my dogs on when they are stuck which is chicken and rice and veggies.

What else is fairly safe, low fat, non flare food, tuna, rice, salmon, rice and no sauces or condiments etc, maybe wraps?

Any other food groups would be great!

It mainly about avoiding too much fat, as when you eat fat the gall bladder releases bile to break down the fats, which causes pain when it's passing the gallstones. So anything low in fat, jacket potatoes maybe with tuna, vegetable soup, rice, beans on toast, pasta....I can't get over how long it takes now for removal ops, when I had them my gallbladder was removed within 2 weeks of my scan confirming gallstones! Wishing you a swift resolution, for me it was the worst pain I've ever experienced!

Yes it’s mainly about avoiding saturated fat.
So watch your dairy, red meat and generally anything else with high saturated fats. It’s different for everyone as to how much they can tolerate but you’re risking huge pain if you don’t restrict fats.

Didn’t Rosemary Conley write her (now otherwise discredited) diet books after going on a low-fat diet to treat her gall bladder problems? You could try getting hold of one of those, although you might want to moderate the sugar.

I ate toast with marmite (no butter) and pasta with a a tomato sauce that was just tinned tomatoes simmered for a bit and blended.

I've just bought myself a fresh veggie soup to get something in me tonight going to make some butternut soup and avoid cream.

I'm ok with pasta, tuna etc trying to avoid coffee, alcohol, chocolate and thinking maybe Greek yogurt will be ok?

I'm not even on a list for removal, it's been a while since a flare so I'm just seeing how long I can tolerate this, if it gets worse I'll have to get antibiotics and then maybe as this is the 3rd flare up I may be on a surgery list?

You need to buy a copy of the (now) ancient Hip and Thigh diet book. Rosemary Connolly devised it as she had gall bladder problems and she completely avoided surgery. It kept me going whilst I was waiting too.

@SuperDupe oh thank you that's super helpful.

Also. What hurts one persons gallbladder doesn’t another. I can eat croissants and chocolate cake but cannot put a whole Egg in my mouth.

i tend to stick to whole foods fruit and veg etc.
breakfast for me is a vegetable omelette and toast and a banana

lunch is chicken and new potatoes. I found some banana popcorn in the baby section that is actually quite nice and some carrot puff Crisps. Both are really low fat.

for dinner I have veggies pots chicken , turkey or fish. Yes it is boring. But the pain is worse.

SorrowsPrayers · 29/11/2024 19:38

Mine may have been rather extreme but when I was suffering gallstone attacks the only thing I could eat was porridge made with water.
Lost loads of weight!

creamsnugjumper · 29/11/2024 20:00

Porridge is a good call, with some fruit maybe banana.

Then lunch of soups or chicken and salmon or tuna with jackets for evening, maybe I could eat rice cakes and popcorn. 🍿

Drinking lots of water and herbal teas, I'm making ginger tea with turmeric. To be honest my appetite is tiny, but just needed some ideas of safe food.

God I wish this pain would go away, it's been low level for about 2 weeks but it's not shifting so GP next week but hoping I can ride this flare out with my heat pads and over the counter pain killers.

I'm not wanting a hospital stay just to be told to go home and wait.

Anyone know if you can have any tea or coffee?? Much appreciated

woodymumoftwo · 28/01/2025 22:08

Hi I have a gallstone had it for three years now. I drink decaf tea and I seem to be fine, I don't drink coffee,I tend to keep food below 5% fat if I can and eat lots of fruit and veg. Big soup is a good choice whole meal pasta. If you like ready meals Morrisons have just brought out a low fat meal range. I had the lasagne tonight with lots of sweetcorn. It's hit and miss with me sometimes I have no ache other times it's there for ages.

Queenage · 28/01/2025 22:13

I've just been diagnosed today with cholecystitis which is gallbladder inflammation plus gallstones. I've been put on the waiting list for surgery and given a booklet on what to eat. When I get up in the morning I'll photocopy the pages for you and post them. Basically it's less than 3% fat. Currently I'm living on fat free yoghurt, bananas and ginger nuts as it's all I can stomach but like someone upthread said everyone is different so you'll find your trigger foods I'm sure - good luck at doc

Dammit, zombie thread lol

TulipTuesday · 28/01/2025 22:18

For most of November, December and the start of January I only ate Wholemeal toast with a bit of jam for breakfast, a small amount of Covent Garden tomato and basil soup for dinner, and either cod or chicken with wholemeal rice and broccoli for tea. I occasionally had a couple of marshmallows as a sweet snack. I lost a lot of weight.

I’d had gallstones for a couple of years but a flare up at the start of November triggered near constant low level pain in my ribs and back. Sticking to that diet alongside painkillers and heat pads just about made it bearable.

I’m now 1 week post cholecystectomy and already able to eat more normal food. I even had some maltesers earlier.

Oh the glamorous gallbladder girls. Urgh. It's stopping the weight falling off that's the issue, with such a small appetite.
