Does anyone genuine actually buy on FB marketplace or is it the home of all scammers?

So fed up of telling scammers to fuck off.

Is your item still available?
(Me immediately thinking oh hello, my "item" . Sigh) Yes, it is. Are you interested?

Actually no, let's be friends / i wanted to talk to you about fake business shit / how about I pay you 500 for this 20 quid item / your item looks more amazing than the mona Lisa you're clearly the most amazingly talented and wonderful and brilliant human to ever walk the earth and you're destined to rule the world. Urgh. I know it's the downside to online selling but ffs we can send a man to the moon but we can't invent a way to punch people through the Internet?

Priorities people, priorities!

DH has been trying to sell some of his late father's belongings.

The most common scam we've found is the Paypal one. "I can't collect it but my cousin will and I'll pay you now".

He's taken it all to charity shops as he can't stand another message!

I don't blame him.
It's the last thing you need!

I buy and sell on it regularly. Make sure you always put "scammers will be blocked" on all your selling posts - that seems to be enough to make them not bother with you, as you're clearly clued up and not worth their while.

I've sold lots of stuff and never had a problem. I've been clearing out the garage and loft and have a number of obscure things most go in a few days.

BarnacleBeasley · 29/11/2024 15:05

Where I live, people seem to do quite well in more local community selling groups, rather than just listing on marketplace.

Maggispice · 29/11/2024 15:05

I sold a washing machine within a two hours a few days ago but it was terribly underpriced. £40 when it's being sold for £300 used and the next cheapest was £180 but not working so it was for parts only. £500 new.
I needed the space and neglected to check the second hand value.

Just lost it cheap and you'll be swarmed with real buyers.

ProssecoSparkle · 29/11/2024 15:08

I've not used it for years since I sold a cooker. The guy picking it up said to dh if there's anything wrong with this remember I know where you live and I will be back with a baseball bat.

CaveMum · 29/11/2024 15:09

I’ve sold a few bits and pieces (mostly odd bits of furniture and kids old toys) and only ever had one scammer try and offer the “pay via Western Union and courier collect” scam for a child’s bike. I just blocked them.

I always put “Payment in cash on collection only” on all my adverts now.

I do however have issues with time wasters - people who message to ask if still available, then ask when they can collect only to never be heard of again! I had 3 people do that to me recently over a box of bloody Duplo!

barbarahunter · 29/11/2024 15:10

My sons always seem to sell their unwanted but good condition things. I just get all the scammers. I will not be bothering to try to sell on Facebook again.

Luminousalumnus · 29/11/2024 15:10

We buy and sell all the time. Currently sitting on a marketplace sofa, looking at marketplace cushions, poofs, extension leads.

isthesolution · 29/11/2024 15:11

I use it quite a lot for local things yes.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 29/11/2024 15:16

Thanks everyone. Good to know I am not totally wasting my time.
Good suggestion to put scammers will be blocked, I'll try that.
