Vegan party food?

VeganQuery · 28/11/2024 19:17

Hosting a birthday party soon and two of the guests are vegans. We're catering ourselves doing lunchboxes for the kids and I'd ideally like them all to be the same so that it doesn't matter where the children sit.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what sort of stuff would work well in a party lunch box. I was going to put in bags of party rings or Oreos because I thought both of them were suitable but when shopping tonight the packets said suitable for vegetarians which gave me pause for thought on buying them?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Ps OP

Just a reminder than vegans don’t eat honey, just in case you were planning on honey sandwiches

Read the label on the jam you use if you’re making sandwiches some manufacturers use gelatine

Hi op, lots of great suggestions here. Do you live near Aldi? They have a great range, the fake chicken slices are like ham and my toddler loves them.

Just a heads up (I'm vegan) the vegan baby bels are not very nice to a lot of people and a non-vegan child probably won't appreciate them as they do taste very different to dairy baby bels. I'd avoid in your shoes.

Malt loaf is a good one I haven't seen on this amazing list yet. Already mentioned but my kids love vegan sausage rolls (from anywhere).

Well done to you for deciding to make it all vegan.

This list is so helpful thank you! Are all the heartley jellies vegan suitable?

Also I really appreciate the heads up about the pom bears not all being suitable and I didn't know they made dairylea dunkers that were plant based I could definitely do those.

The ready made individual pots are, but the jelly cubes and sachets are not. I've bought a load for a kids party next weekend because any not eaten can be taken home and chucked in the cupboard

Alternatively if you want to make your own, the sachets of Wibble jelly from Tesco are v good.

Really? What brands? In nearly 30 years of being mostly-vegan I have never seen jam with gelatine in!

mitogoshigg · 29/11/2024 08:01

And for sandwiches, jam sandwiches!

Pretzels
onion badjis
falafels
spring rolls
vegan sausage rolls ( you could even cut into pieces some from Greggs )
popcorn
dark chocolate
lolly pops
candy canes
skittles ( be careful as special editions containing blue skittles are not vegan )
Foxes chunky cookies
McVities hobnobs
Lotus biscoff

@TofuTart is quite right about those mini scotch eggs ….yum!

They're so good, aren't they?
I'd also say be careful with dark chocolate as most are vegan but some have milk in

That’s a very good point @TofuTart re dark chocolate its imperative always to check the labels on everything.

I can’t remember what makes I’m afraid.
Thats why if I spot a different make I always check, never assume anything.

Some Refined White sugar isn’t vegan either, unless the manufacturer clearer states it is.( In the US for example it’s about 50/50 )

HooMoo · 29/11/2024 12:35

I’m vegan.

Oreos and party rings are vegan. Good vegan chocolate is Nomo in the free from aisle at most supermarkets.

Then hummus and created carrot sandwiches, or hummus and roast veggies are good combinations. A falafel etc.

Most crisps are vegan which aren’t cheese ones.

Also there’s some cakes in most supermarkets called Oggs which are really good.

LadyGabriella · 29/11/2024 12:37

Tesco finest crisps at the moment are all vegan.

Toooldtocareanymore · 29/11/2024 12:49

Fruittella the packet sweets and the Duo Stix have a vegan version and you get a good few individual sticks in a large bag

LadyGabriella · 29/11/2024 12:49

Biscoff spread sandwiches?
Drumstick lollies
Love hearts
Oggs cakes
Fruitells duo sticks
Percy pigs

Pom Bear, anyone?

( Remember that thread?)

I would steer clear of fake meat and cheese which are largely repulsive, and stick with chopped veg and dips. Such a headache! Hummus? Stuffed vine leaves? Do vegans eat crisps? You can also get vegan chocolate I think.

LadyGabriella · 29/11/2024 12:58

Falafels

Words · 29/11/2024 13:04

PS I wouldn't worry about the vegan children not eating their veg etc.I am sure they will!
Then just do regular stuff for everyone else.

OP stated she’s doing the same for everyone

If it's a seating arrangement issue, just write the child's name on the box, followed by a V, assuming they are those cardboard jobs and it is not a cast of thousands.

You can even get vegan water these days too if they are especially strict. My friend spotted this at a work conference the other week.

Of course vegans eat crisps 🙂
You do have to be careful to read the ingredients though as quite a few crisps annoyingly have milk in.

Yep the idea is to make it all suitable for everyone which shouldn't be too challenging thanks to all the brilliant ideas on this thread.

My current thinking is for each box to have:

A packet of party rings
A piece of fruit
A heartley jelly pot
A packet of crisps
Mini soreen malt loafs

I'm going to steer clear of the babybels and I don't want to fill the boxes with fake meat versions but I will double check with the parents if their kids eat sausage rolls as if so I can definitely do a plate of vegan ones.

Also for all those suggesting jam sandwiches this was my plan regardless of the vegans, it's not a party without some jam sarnies. 😁

Must be a US thing as you say , as sugar is definitely vegan in the UK!
Jam is as well

Words · 29/11/2024 13:52

I think you need some protein in there - cheese chunks?for balance at least for the majority non vegans, otherwise they will be bouncing off the walls with all the sugar and additives.

Are you providing a cake of some sort?

VeganQuery · 29/11/2024 14:11

There will be other sandwich choices available including cheese but these won't be in the boxes.

There will also be cakes to take home which I guess they will eat when leaving.

Appreciate the warning but I'm not sure the food will make them any more hyper. In my experience parties tend to make them bounce off the walls even without any food. 😅

We ever done boxes but things we’ve served

Hummus and cucumber sandwiches
Jam sandwiches
Vegan sausage rolls
Vegan cocktail sausages
Vegan pizza
Fruit kebabs
Cucumber and carrot sticks
Jammie dodgers, bourbons, oreos
Sweets - swizzels brand, starburst and skittles
Pringles original flavour
Popcorn
Vegan marshmallows
Vegan cupcakes

You could put a fruit pot in, like the Dole ones, but most supermarkets do their own.
