ADHD Meds for DD16

Posting here for traffic.

DD16 was diagnosed in the summer, paed said no to meds at the time because she was doing her GCSEs and she has ongoing stomach issues (IBS and waiting for more tests).

DD is having a follow up in Jan and has said she wants to go on medication.

All experience welcome - side effects, gentler on tummy - esp for a 16yr old girl.

She's really suffering with her focus and wants to quieten her mind.

I'm worried about her going on them as I know they are very powerful (and controlled) but understand why she wants to.

I really recommend this book op, it answered all my questions. Written by a Professor at GOSH.

DS started on adhd meds at the same age. The only side effect has been reduced appetite. He has found them transformative for coping at school and I’m only sorry I resisted him taking them at first.

DS 16 started last Dec in year 11 - it has been transformative - we had to go private - have regular follow ups- the only stressful thing is being able to get the medication as in short supply, only real side effect is slight loss of appetite although not sure if this is more DS trying to lose a little weight after having a more inactive summer than usual. He wants to stay on them as his focus has improved tremendously and he feels like he is now on par with his friends

Medication has really helped DD at school, same age as yours. She takes Concerta or equivalent (the medication shortages are a pain). The dose was monitored carefully and adjusted with regular check ups. Loss of appetite is the main side effect plus a bit of a mood crash sometimes as the meds wear off. Sleep isnt great either but that goes with adhd. I was reluctant for the same reasons as you but it’s been fine and very helpful for her.

I posted the same thing on another platform and had mostly positive replies. Side effects were worth the pay off. Currently exploring this for my 13 year old. Main starter seems to be concerta on lowest dose.

Have no doubt we will have to pay which is going to be difficult. The diagnosis was private because requests for NHS assessment were declined.
