Do you have a garden shed base if it's on grass?

Getting a garden shed and have grass in my garden, I've been told I will need to get a base for it and also drainage so that rain runs off it.
I have no clue about garden sheds as have never bought one.
If yours is on grass, do you have a base for it? If you have a flat roof, does the rain run off it or just sit on top? I have seen a shed I was going to buy, it's wood and has a flat roof.
Any general advice would be appreciated, thank you!

You really need a solid foundation base to stop it rotting at the bottom of the shed.

SherlocksDeerstalker · 28/11/2024 17:18

All sheds will need a base, even if it’s just flat patio slabs. You can’t just put it straight into grass. It will rot.

You need a base as it will just sink into the grass.

A plastic shed is the easiest solution - keter brand is in homebase/argos etc .

Usually the base in concrete slabs - you dig out the grass, put hardcore and cement the slabs in .

A wood shed will need treating to protect the wood and the flat roof will collect water. a pitched roof is easier. Keter sheds come with guarantees - I have a large one with a 15 year warranty but even the small 3 ft x 4Ft ones come
with a 5 year warranty

Yes, it needs to sit on paving slabs or similar, or it will rot.

Can't help with the flat roof ours has a pitched roof.

Poppins2016 · 28/11/2024 17:20

You definitely need a base, it's standard to prevent against rot. I can vouch for this, as the previous owners of our house installed a shed onto grass without a base and it's rotting from the base up!

BashfulClam · 28/11/2024 17:22

We have some slabs and wooden batons under ours to stop it rotting.

Mittens67 · 28/11/2024 17:22

Remove turf and put down a weed suppressing membrane then gravel and sleepers. Kept my shed dry and solid for decades.

museumum · 28/11/2024 17:23

we inherited one just put on grass and the foxes dug under it and it subsided. eventually rotted.
we replaced it with one on concrete slabs and it's MUCH better.

SleepyTraveller · 28/11/2024 17:36

Yes - I had to move mine onto grass temporarily, without a base, and now it has grass growing inside it!

Donotpanicoknowpanic · 28/11/2024 17:47

You need a base

You could easily do the one in the image

I have my shed on concrete fence posts turned sideways

This allows air flow under the shed

And also stops the shed from sitting in water

If you use paving slabs or concrete, if it's not done properly you risk pooling water which will rot the shed

Donotpanicoknowpanic · 28/11/2024 17:49

Just to explain the image, it's a base that you put a membrane down

Place the grid on top

Then add gravel

It will be better than on the grass and easy to do

You can buy them off ebay

I have never seen a shed with a completely flat roof - that is asking for trouble.

If you are referring to the image it is slopped front to back

Donotpanicoknowpanic · 28/11/2024 18:44

Might have misspelt a bit there

Did the OP post an image? I can't see it if so.

You do need a base. Ours is railway sleepers( can buy seconds cheaply. I know you said it’s a flat roof but it’ll have a slant. Just run guttering along and get a Waterbutt at the downpipe. Always good to have free water for garden/ car washing.

LIZS · 29/11/2024 08:17

Yes otherwise it will rot quickly, wood will soak up water from grass below.

Nourishinghandcream · 29/11/2024 08:29

As well as a solid base you need a proper way of managing water from the roof.

If you don't have guttering then the water will run off the roof, onto the floor, splash and soak that side of the shed causing it to rot.
Guttering and a downpipe are the minimum, you can add a water butt to collect water but work out where the outflow will go (avoid soaking the ground and shed base).

Ah well, it was the OP who said the shed had a flat roof, and it was that I was referring to, not your picture. 🙂
