Can I get an exterminator in for one mouse?

We have had (as far as I know) one mouse in our house for about two months. We've tried putting traps down, no food is left out but so far no luck catching it. We've only seen it a few times but hear it so know it's still around. No idea how it got in.

We think it's in the living room so always keep the door shut to try and contain it although it can probably get out some other way.

We moved all the furniture last week and took everything out the shelves and it shot around the room for a bit and then disappeared.

I want it gone! What can I do? Is there someone who will come and magically find it for me?

Unless you are in the country and it is a field mouse that ran in and then couldn't get out, it is very unlikely you have just the one mouse. You'd do well to get the pest control company in now before it can become a bigger problem.

Get them in before it becomes more than one mouse (if it hasn’t already).

ScarlettSunset · 28/11/2024 17:08

It's never just one mouse.
If you're finding your traps aren't working, then call in the professionals. They will know best where to place traps or how else to deal with them.

PickAChew · 28/11/2024 17:09

What are you putting in the traps?

birdglasspen2 · 28/11/2024 17:09

I was told if you see a mouse then you have lots! By a mouse exterminator. Usually you just see the droppings. Have you checked round edges of room etc for them? A mouse can squish itself under a door easily…as in they can get through spaces which don’t look mouse sized. What are you putting in trap? Peanut butter is good they can grab cheese and run. Something they lick is best. Or poison. Down where you find droppings out of way of pets.

It very unlikely to be just one mouse, so yes get an expert in.
In the mean time peanut butter works well in the traps. They can get through a hole the size of a pencil. Remove any food they may be feeding on.
Poison can work well, but if they then die in the walls the smell is awful.

Remove all food sources from the room as best you can.
Position your traps along a wall - mice run around the edges of rooms initially so they know where they are and from a 'safety' point of view if they've an escape to outside/another room they'll be able to get to it easily. When they come across your nice tasty trap bait - and they've no other food, that's what they find and trigger the trap.

If it was me I'd probably eat all the food in the house in one sitting and get 900 cats. But you should probably call a pest control company. It won't be one mouse.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 28/11/2024 17:39

It definitely wont be one mouse!

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 28/11/2024 17:41

Perfect excuse to get a cat!

helibirdcomp · 28/11/2024 17:50

Friend has a recurring mouse problem. Exterminator told her that mice in different area have different taste in bait! Peanut butter works for me and I have had some success with chocolate. Wash the traps and handle with rubber gloves to keep your smell off them. As said previously put them along walls and leave the droppings in place and put traps close to them but yes get an exterminator in. They can probably identify entry points and block them with wire wool

Ponderingwindow · 28/11/2024 17:52

You always think it is one mouse. The odds of that are slim. Call an exterminator. They are experts at tracking down nests and the tiny cracks they can use at entry points.

What are you putting in the traps?

I recommend peanut butter on raisins!

RafaistheKingofClay · 28/11/2024 18:30

An exterminator can put down powder to see where they are coming from/going to. That might help you position traps better. Although tbh mine just put poison down which sorted the problem.
