Would you/your child be happy with a cupcake but no party bag?

4th birthday party, I was thinking of just giving a Christmas themed cupcake at the end in a little box. I’ve always done party bags and I know the kids look forward to them (although parents do not lol), but I’m trying to make things simpler.

Have you been to a party where this is done? Did it go down well? I’m ordering from a local cake maker and her cupcakes are delicious. My boy will have his own cupcake to blow out a candle and the kids will leave with theirs.

I do sweet cones and slice of cake.

I think a cupcake is enough. Realistically at 4 it's one of their first parties so why set the party bag bar high? The trend around where we are js to move away from plastic tat. A book is also a good idea if you want to do that, but not essential if you don't.

Mine wouldn’t have cared at that age. I’d have been thrilled to bits with cake. When I was a kid there weren’t party bags. You got a slice of cake in a paper napkin and possibly a balloon. I’ve just watched that programme in Netflix about consumerism and waste and it’s reminded me how truly awful plastic tat is.

We're watching it at the moment. I was anxious about it before but goodness I feel ill now 🤢

I held the first party of reception in September and thought that I'd try and set the vibe with a cupcake in a themed box and some stickers. If any children weren't happy, they certainly acted well whilst leaving!
At my eldest's first school, a party bag filled with little toys was pretty unusual, there were more seed bombs than bouncy balls, so I do think it also depends on the school demographic as to how it's received.

However dc recently went to a party. They were each given one of these as the party bag , but it had felt tips . Inside was the cake. A pack of drumstick sqaishies and a chocolate bar.
So it was a gift and treat in one.
Dc loved coloring it and often fills it with stuff.
No plastic tat happy days

A cupcake in a little box sounds great. My kids would be delighted! I wouldn’t ruin the cuteness of that cake by giving a big flappy picture book out with it either. A pretty cake is a lovely gift for a kid. I wouldn’t get anything professionally made for that purpose either but your choice if that’s what you prefer obviously.

Mine wouldn't. He's probably autistic though.

He spends most of any party asking whether there will be party bags as I try to manage his expectations that there might not be one.

There has always been one but I don't know what he would do if there wasn't one. Probably cry.

He's a bit of a rare case though.

That’s actually adorable.

I think most kids look forward to them but for mine it was mainly about the sweets not the plastic tat. Go for a come of sweets or a selection box and ditch the cake if you need to (most little kids seem to just lick half the icing off then abandon the cake).

I've been to a couple that do this and the kids have been delighted! They're big fans of cake, and it looks extra special in the little box. Are they the kind with a little cardboard handle on top? If so, maybe a cute little keyring could be attached if you think they'll miss not having something to keep?

keyring is a lovely idea. They love having them all clanking about hanging off their school bags too!

I agree lots seem to have an issue in that they lick off the icing and won’t eat the cake, or peel off the icing and only eat the cake.

Mine devour both with equal gusto, so I’m always a bit fed up perplexed when other children do this. But it’s a definite thing.

My 6 year old would love it and probably wouldn't realise there was no party bag to be honest.

4 is Very early for birthday parties! Chances are the kids won't know about or care about party bags. Cupcakes are more than enough
