What on earth do you buy a baby?

I need to buy a Christmas gift for a baby! Baby is 6 months old. I don't have kids, I have absolutely no idea what gift to get. Cuddly toys are off limits apparently. Help please!

OP, the "Puffin Baby and Toddler Treasury" is also a lovely book if you want to avoid the above.

Thank you! I've just bought one that I loved as a child, we'd had a conversation about it a while ago and no one knew what I was on about, so I think it's a good'un!

Books - "A night before Christmas" is wonderfully rhyming and will get read for the next decade.
Anything written by Julia Donaldson = Gruffalo is a classic.
Oliver Jeffers books.

I'd only buy board books or else collectible types to sit on a shelf until they are much older.

You can't go wrong with books in my experience. As a parent a new book is a godsend as children will often want to read the same thing over and over.

I'm not sure I'd bother with Beatrix Potter or Wind in the Willows type collections on the basis that while they look lovely, my children had little interest.

My very first thought was a Jellycat but unfortunately we've been asked not to buy any soft toys. It's still on my own Christmas list though 😂

I have seen some sort of sensory/teething toy in the shape of a game console controller which looks quite cute. Dad's a gamer as well so that could be good? I'd rather avoid clothes etc. A book could be good. Does it need to be for a 6 month old baby or can I get something they'll read as they get older?

Buy something for when they are a bit older. Look Julia Donaldsons books eg The Singing Mermaid or The Gruffalo. For a bit older Where the wild things are or the Velveteen Rabbit. Or buy a Beatrix Potter.

Just some nice pyjamas or something. Or something for developmental purposes such as a shape sorter.

If I cant buy them for myself (the collection keeps growing I cant stop!) I love to gift them to people.

I'd love to as well but I'm the only person in my circle who actually likes stuff like that, and I already have far too many at home so I'm on a buying ban. Hopefully some of my family took the hint (the hint being JELLYCAT written several times in large letters on my xmas list..)

My baby is 4.5 month and got every VTech toy going..! I would probably suggest an outfit but definitely size up and get something for Spring?
