Is this a known scam ?

Got a phone call from busy call centre claiming to be Amazon.
Asked if I’d logged on this morning and tried purchasing an iPhone (No I hadn’t).
Said I’d received a text message from Amazon with a code (I had just rec’d it)
They then asked what the code was.
I said it states in the text message not to share the code with anyone.
They said that doesn’t apply to Amazon themselves and asked again.
I said no - they ended the call.

All sounds very scammy I know, but the text message is the same thread as other genuine texts from Amazon.

Have I thwarted a scam ? Or thwarted Amazon trying to stop a scam ??

Sounds like it was a scam. Well done

Sometimes they ask for a code to when you are resetting your password or logging on from a different device. You absolutely shouldn't give it out over the phone and it's definitely a scam. I'd change your Amazon password just in case.

Yes it's a scam.

You got further into the conversation than I would have done.
Why would Amazon phone people?
I would have hung up pretty much straight away.
Well done for not getting scammed.

Scam. They've either spoofed the number or the number ID in a way that makes it look genuine or it's an inside job from someone in Amazon/accessing their systems. Check your Amazon account for any purchases you haven't made.

Jostuki · 28/11/2024 10:02

They do not randomly phone customer's about a purchase! They'd have to make millions of phone calls! 😂

BearOnABlanket · 28/11/2024 10:03

Yes ABSOLUTELY A SCAM!

never share codes with someone who's called you.

Finetoday · 28/11/2024 10:04

They made out like they were protecting me - the rotten scammy scammers !

Ive reported the number to Amazon - phew 😮‍💨

This was literally discussed on the radio yesterday, how bizarre - definitely a Scam and Amazon said themselves they'd never ask for the code and to always make sure you have dual authentication turned on

This isn't the case. It's a scam where they have triggered a reset code for your password, they want you to give them the code so they can hijack your account and probably buy gift cards with your saved payment information. Perhaps your email and phone number have been associated through a data leak.

baddayformeredith · 28/11/2024 10:05

It is a scam and they got my dad with it. He lost approximately £1800. More upsetting was got upset he was as he's always so savvy

senua · 28/11/2024 10:05

Oh, but they do! I quite often get calls about a suspect purchase on my account.

Which is interesting, seeing as I don't have an Amazon account ... Grin

LittleRedRidingHoody · 28/11/2024 10:05

They have your number, check it's related to an Amazon account, call you, trigger the 'I've forgotten my password' with your number on their device, real Amazon texts you the code, you give them the code, and then they're in your Amazon account and can order whatever they want!

This is exactly what they're doing - they've got half-way in, but they need the code from the 2-factor auth to get the whole way in and steal stuff.

Change your passwords - your details have been leaked somewhere

Hoppinggreen · 28/11/2024 10:06

Never give codes sent to your phone to anyone else.
The ones I get from my bank tell me not to give it to anyone, even bank staff

Justleaveitblankthen · 28/11/2024 10:09

I don't answer unknown ( to me) numbers.
Simply search on 'Who Called Me' and they usually have hundreds of reports, then block.
If they have hidden their number under an 'Amazon ID' (and only if I had some issue I needed resolving already) I would tell them I will hang up to call Amazon support myself 😎

MumblesParty · 28/11/2024 10:19

I basically never give information to people who have called me. If any company I’ve dealt with called me and said there was an issue, I’d say thank you, I’ll give them a call and try to resolve it. Then go on the website, get the number, and call them myself. Obviously I don’t usually bother because it’s almost always a blatant scam.

Realistically, how often do companies legitimately call customers on the phone these days? Pretty much never.

How has anything I posted which you have quoted been wrong? Absolutely the reset code is to access an account. I haven't said it isn't.

Edit: Ah - my bad. I read the OP that the call showed as coming from Amazon...

Anyway, yes they're trying to hack your account. Change your password pronto.

Coffeecakelatte · 28/11/2024 12:17

Yes, a scam. They don't ring you. As another pp said, if you're ever unsure, put the phone down and ring the company back using their official number.

yukuta · 28/11/2024 12:19

Yes it’s a scam to get into your account, never give one time codes to anyone on the phone and always put down and ring the company back on their official number or customer chat line if anything seems sketch.
