Trying to get rid of clothes, and wondering about weight loss

I know people write these things all the time but I wish I could be more ruthless at being rid of old clothes. I’m trying to go through everything, and I’ve convinced myself that if I’ve got rid of four items then that’s better than nothing, but I wish I could have a more thorough clearout. My Vinted account has a slow, constant drip feed of stuff but my actual wardrobe is so full of stuff I don’t wear.

To anyone who’s lost loads of weight, did you actually go back to wearing your old clothes again, or did you find you no longer liked them and ended up getting rid of them anyway? Or, have you got rid of a load of clothes and then regretted it?

I also have bags and bags of bras as I’ve changed size so many times that it’s hard to keep up with the constant size changes. I read someone’s advice somewhere that you should never get rid of bras as they’re expensive above certain sizes and you might go back to that size again. But surely I should bring myself to get rid of at least something?

Please help motivate me to clear some space!

I lost a load of weight and brought new bits as I wanted to 'reward' myself - I never touched the bits left in my wardrobe that I'd always left for when I'd fit in them again! I didn't spend a fortune (lots of stretchy stuff until the weight settled!) but definitely didn't want to go back to what I'd worn before.

That being said, if you feel you're going to lose weight/fit in stuff again soon, it might be worth holding on to.

I have done a mix of retaining and ruthlessly binning and am on the fence.

binned stuff - a couple of regrets
retained stuff - a few gems but a lot of “this is too baggy / too tight/ doesn’t represent me now”

I would say keep treasured or special items otherwise release it to the universe.
My size 12 now at 40 is v different to my size 12 shape at 30 😵‍💫

I am ruthless. I don't keep anything that doesn't currently fit; I like minimalism though and not having too much choice, as it helps keep my life simple. I don't ever intend on putting the weight on again so donated all of my larger clothes and slowly replenished them with smaller sizes. I personally haven't missed anything that I've got rid of.

Bag it up and put it in the loft.

I live in a flat, with no loft or any other storage space. That’s partly why I’d like to clear some space.

Do treasured or special items include clubbing clothes from when I was about 22? I’ll never wear them again but for some reason they have sentimental value!

I've got rid of lots of clothes selling them at car boot sales, this is good if you don't want too much money for them, if you've paid more then it's better on vinted but as most of my clothes were given to me or are second hand I'm happy with 2 or 3 euros each.

The thing about car boot sales is that you need to have quite a lot of clothes in order to make it worth doing. On Vinted I only tend to have a few items for sale at any given time as I never manage to have a big clearout, just a constant dripfeed.

What do you think about getting rid of bras? I’ve got so many bags of them it’s ridiculous but they are all different sizes as my size never stays the same for long enough.

I'm sure you're not really meant to hang on to bras for years as the elasticity starts to go? But maybe keep 1 or 2 of each size?

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 27/11/2024 15:30

Nice or expensive stuff is labelled by size and boxed in the attic.

It might even have been me on the bra front, those things cost a bloody bomb over an H cup!

The rest goes to charity.

TheGirlattheBack · 27/11/2024 15:37

I declutter my wardrobe once a year. The trick is to take out everything you wear frequently throughout the year and put them to one side. What’s left has to have a very good reason to stay in your wardrobe - a couple of sentimental items are fine, a few items you will slim into also fine. The rest goes to charity.

soupfiend · 27/11/2024 15:42

I lost so much weight that my 'slim' clothes were too big, I was looking forward to wearing them and then I got past that point before I got them back out

Personally I dumped the lot at charities, I could have made shed loads of money selling it but the faff and effort of that I really couldnt be doing with it, the time, I just wanted them gone, as I shed the weight I wanted to shed excess around me too, including clothes and shoes. They represented fatter me and so Iwanted them out of the house quickly

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 27/11/2024 16:11

“Special interest” items like fave clubbing tops have gone under the ottoman bed in a specific box for my daughter when she is bigger. (When I hit capacity certain items have to leave the box 😅)

my wardrobe is purely for things that I will wear

Cut them up and bin them.
You can also donate them to Countries abroad.

Why would you cup them up and bin them if they are still in good condition? What a waste.
