Bought organic spinach from Sainsbury's, did not check wash before use label. Dd and I have eaten yesterday, I mean nearly about 100 leaves. Spinach was not cooked. It was very clean otherwise I would have noticed.Do i need to worry?

no there are no signs of stomach upset or any other health issues. DD is 10 so worried more about her than me. Online searches coming up with E Coli infection etc, scary stuff.

Haven’t eaten spinach since I found the head from a cockroach in it.
Sorry - just check it before you pour it on the plate. I just can’t face it.

Calliopespa · 27/11/2024 09:50

Bagged salads and spinach can have listeria but I think you’d know by now .

I’m not certain a quick rinse would sort that anyway . We all live dangerously!

DelilahBucket · 27/11/2024 09:53

Food poisoning presents very quickly OP. I suggest you put the internet away. Besides which, can't say I've ever bought a bag of spinach that isn't labelled "washed and ready to eat". You'd know if it wasn't washed, it would have been covered in dirt.

Yes, she'd have known within half an hour to an hour that something was amiss.

For years I used to put frozen Spinach into my morning smoothie. Then suddenly the packaging started having a warning on it not to eat it raw because of the danger of food poisoning.
Well I'd been using it raw for a long long time with no Ill effects.
Since they put warnings on the frozen I stopped using it and buy the fresh Sainsbury's packets. I do give it a quick rinse.

Using the frozen was so much more convenient though because of the short nutritional life of the fresh.

I never wash any fruit or veg unless it's obviously muddy ie leeks when mud gets between the layers.

Isobel201 · 27/11/2024 10:03

all vegetables are washed before being bagged, you'll be fine.

Though weirdly I think it’s the pre-washing that can be the cause of listeria - something to do with trapped moisture?

Anyway, I’m sure you’re fine oP

lovenaturelovelife · 27/11/2024 10:16

It was very clean , no moisture- nice dry leaves. Otherwise I would have washed it.

Like a PP says, it's the washed stuff that's at risk of causing illness because it's been sitting around damp for a few days.

And no, a quick rinse won't remove any germs/bugs/bacteria it needs a right good soaking. I used to work in a sandwich shop and all the 'leaves' had to be soaked for 10 minutes in a sink of a very dilute bleach like solution before they could be used.

But I think the main reason for washing salad at home is to remove any soil, which will taste unpleasantly gritty but probably unlikely to be harmful. I don't really wash things unless they are dusty/dirty and have never had 'food poisoning' of any kind as far as I can recall.

Justleaveitblankthen · 27/11/2024 14:59

I like the taste of soil in teeny tiny amounts 😋

lovenaturelovelife · 27/11/2024 15:05

I'm still living so eating unwashed is fine.
