If you avoid polyester clothing, how strict are you?

I’ve been avoiding buying polyester clothing for several years and it generally feels much better this way. The only exceptions are sportswear, and bras because it’s impossible to avoid when you’re a large size and need support.

There’s a nice Boden skirt I’ve seen online that’s 50/50 polyester and cotton, and it does look like it’s of good quality, but I’m not sure whether to go for it or not.

Also having a wardrobe clearout and wondering what to keep or get rid of in this respect.

If you avoid polyester, how strict are you about it?

Depends why you avoid it. I avoid anything first layer, so touching skin but am less strict about outer layers. I'd always wear leggings under a skirt so wouldn't discount a 50:50 mix on a skirt if I really liked it.

I can't wear it on my top half, or in any bedding because it makes me too hot. I can stand it in trousers, although I prefer to wear cotton or linen. I do have one polycotton long sleeved top, but I can only wear that if the temperatures are freezing outside.

I don't like acrylic either, but can usually cope with acrylic cardigans in the really cold weather.

It depends what it’s for. As you say, it’s hard to avoid it in bras and also tights. Exercise gear too, although I’ve started to buy bamboo instead now. I can live with it for going out stuff that I’ll only be wearing for a few hours at a time, and I can live with coats being 20-30% synthetic. But I know from experience that anything I want to wear all day will feel horrible if it isn’t all natural materials- that nasty sweaty, sticky feeling where you’re hot and cold at the same time. I know I’d end up not wearing it, so for everyday clothes it’s cotton, linen, viscose or nothing for me. I guess silk would be ok, but I don’t really have that kind of lifestyle 😀

I’d like to avoid acrylic too but it can be very difficult to do so.

Yes exactly, that's how I get - kind of synthetically warm but not in any comfortable way! Also trying to avoid the polyester etc, I find merino wool is a winner.

If its for colder weather then Im not bothered....if its for summer then Im very careful to avoid it as I sweat like a pig when the suns out!

I am pretty strict and try to stick to cotton .Some materials bring me out in a rash.

LilacLilyBird · 27/11/2024 15:26

Sports wear is different because the more expensive technical brands use a special technology where the weave is hollow to wick sweat away

Something like that

I only wear synthetic materials when it’s extremely difficult or expensive to avoid them, eg gym leggings, tights, bras, waterproofs. You can definitely get a skirt that isn’t polycotton so I absolutely would.
