Which way would you have fence?

We are replacing the fence at the bottom of our garden. I can't decide which side to have on the inside of our garden. The other side will be directly in our neighbours garden. If we like the job we might consider in the future replacing the side fence but that might mean it needs to be facing in a different direction because it would involve a gate.

Advice please

Which way would you have fence?

I would have the nice flat side facing me.

Does neighbour have shrubs or anything that would block their view of fence? If yes I'd Def keep "nice" side facing your garden. I think general etiquette is that you get the not as nice side though. Depends how much you like the neighbour. 😁

I’d have the nice flat side facing into your garden

CatsAreMyFavouritePeople · 25/11/2024 21:56

To me it depends what is on the other side. If theres small kids it looks like something fun to climb up. I would have the flat side out over. If not I would have flat side facing you.

Mebebecat · 25/11/2024 21:59

If you own the fence you have the poles in your garden and the panels facing away from you on the border line, so the neighbours get the best side. If you both own it between you, I think you get to fight about it!

MaryTwerps · 25/11/2024 22:02

The nice side, as you're paying for it.

And if your doing the feather edge overlap, decide which way you want it for privacy.

MouldyCandy · 25/11/2024 22:28

Where I live, most folk have the fence panels installed BETWEEN posts so there is no good or bad side. I think it's more of a faff for the installer so they'd prefer not to do it that way.

At my old house, we had the bad side and it was great for growing climbers up.

Seeingadistance · 25/11/2024 22:33

My understanding is that your neighbour gets the "good" side. Aesthetics aside, it is more secure that way as the side with cross bars is easier to climb.

Roastiesarethebestbit · 25/11/2024 22:35

Personally I prefer the ‘bad side’ as I like to grow stuff to climb on my
fence and the bad
side
offers more
support. I’m not a fan of a naked fence!

2dogsandabudgie · 25/11/2024 22:37

Always have the good side in your garden unless there is nothing the other side. I don't know any neighbours who would think of climbing a fence.

HeddaGarbled · 25/11/2024 22:37

If you have the horizontals on your side, you can put wires across them for climbing plants like roses and clematis.

yikesanotherbooboo · 25/11/2024 22:38

Accepted practice is to have the uprights on the owner's side for maintenance. I prefer this in any case as it gives more options for growing climbers.

This.
Uprights on your side.

Accept that half the answers here will be from people who will never have to put up a wooden fence.

All maintenance is done from the other side, aka the finished side.

Give your neighbours the view of the back of it!

DP thinks that if the fence was facing out into the street we would have the 'good' side on the outside and the 'bad' on the inside of the garden. I think it being the bottom of the garden and facing directly into a neighbours garden we should have the 'good' side. It's our fence and we are paying for it. It's our responsibility. If we have the side fence replaced though I'm thinking the 'good ' side would face outwards. Would that look odd if they face in different directions?

Convention is that the good side of your fence faces your neighbour. And yes, that means that the two sides of your garden in a conventional suburban setting will be different.

Or you buy double-sided fence panels that don't have a 'bad' side.

TheSmallAssassin · 25/11/2024 23:15

DogInATent is right, the good side faces your neighbour.

MaryTwerps · 25/11/2024 23:18

There is no right or wrong answer. The posts thing is a myth and wont be in your deeds and the give your neighbour the good side doesnt work as it everyone did that then how would it work?!

OP you do right if any face the public path to face the nice side out as you dont want people using the structure to climb in.

FishScales · 25/11/2024 23:31

I thought that the neighbours had to get the good side if it's on the boundary because you can't have the fence rails protruding in to the neighbours garden.
