I think I've developed a weird crush on Mark Rylance in Wolf Hall *

As Thomas Cromwell. Those tortured brown eyes! He's the embodiment of suppressed emotion. But. The weird skull cap and hat combo. Would love to be enveloped in his fur-trimmed cloak however.

Hilary Mantel has done a blinder with the character of Cromwell and Mark Rylance plays him so beautifully.

  • Disclaimer, I'm probably ovulating, which accounts for weird crush.

He is mesmerising. I have not really been aware of him until now. I couldn't say I find him physically attractive but there is a quietness and steeliness, a gentleness, warmth, a certainty, a tenderness, determination, a humbleness, a fierceness at times, a charm about the character and his portrayal of him that I just can not take my eyes off. When he wept after Wolsey's daughter turned him down so harshly, I felt really emotional and moved.

I have to tell you all Mark Rylance liked a post of mine on FB last week. I got quite giddy!

BasiliskStare · 25/11/2024 19:29

I love Mark Rylance in Wolf hall - such a good actor . However I heard him on Desert Island discs some years ago & I am not at all sure I would love him so much in real life - he sounded a bit arrogant and nutty ( My opinion only ) but - that's being an actor isn't it.

Gosh! Did you write something extraordinarily erudite??!

Snoopystick · 25/11/2024 19:33

I saw him play Hamlet in the 1980s on a school trip. He was certainly mesmerising 😅

ThePoshUns · 25/11/2024 19:40

Another one joining the adoring chorus. He is mesmerising although Damian Lewis gives him a run for his money when they share a scene.

Not really, it was a story about Anne Boleyn and how Cromwell had excused himself from court claiming he was ill. Cromwell used those weeks to build a case against Anne Boleyn.
I posted "Four years after Anne Boleyn's execution, Cromwell himself faced the chop".

Tbh MR liked everyone elses posts as well as mine😀

Piggywaspushed · 25/11/2024 19:44

Shh, don't tell anyone that!

Seainasive · 25/11/2024 19:48

And he was of course a fabulous BFG!

EvelynBeatrice · 25/11/2024 19:50

Totally confused. I thought Mark Rylance was the luminous toothed Strictly take 2 presenter or second car advert guy ? ! 😁Clearly I’m mistaken - surely

Soonenough · 25/11/2024 19:51

@Growsomeballswoman I have also just googled the Intimacy trailer. Big time fanny flutters here 😳😳

I’ve always fancied him a bit. I met him once and even though he seemed like a bit of an arse (and subsequent interviews have done little to dissuade me of that idea!) he was incredibly charismatic in an almost scarily quiet and intense way. Hard to describe – but he has really got something. And his voice is utterly lovely.

Ohh tell us more!! Why an arse? I can see it, he's very much an ACTOR

Well fancy him as Cromwell, mind!!

MarvelJesus · 25/11/2024 20:00

Rylance is an extraordinary actor. He can convey so much meaning and emotion while his face barely does anything. So, so talented, I can’t take my eyes off him when he’s on the screen.

19Questions · 25/11/2024 20:01

I was actually thinking the same thing earlier! And I've only seen the very short trailers of this Wolf Hall thing. Never seen him in anything else. Just these tiny snippets are enough to turn my head 😅

orangewasp · 25/11/2024 20:07

Not weird at all, OP. Compellung performance and utterly fanciable

Tooty78 · 25/11/2024 20:14

Piggywaspushed · 25/11/2024 19:44

Shh, don't tell anyone that!

😅.
Don't want to derail this thread but remind me to tell you sometime when Henry Cavill also liked a post of mine.......

drudgewithagrudge · 25/11/2024 20:14

I'm not going to watch the last episode. It would be a rerun of when my Ddad took me to see A tale of Two Cities at the cinema. I had an enormous crush on Dirk Bogarde and Ddad had no idea how the story ended. He had to cope with 9 year old me having hysterics. Mother was not pleases.

LochKatrine · 25/11/2024 20:15

Pistachiochiochio · 25/11/2024 18:44

Many of the female characters agree with you, it seems

Quite. I can't see it myself.

LochKatrine · 25/11/2024 20:18

I don't like his dull, trembly voice, it's always a monotone and slightly strangled. I can't see the attraction, but we're all different.
Damian Lewis as Henry, however! What a tour de force. Utterly compelling.

Norugratsatall · 25/11/2024 20:19

I've always had a thing about Mark Rylance!

Ilovemyshed · 25/11/2024 20:21

I ADORE him, those lovely crinkly eyes and cheeky smile. Haven't seen anything I don't like him in.

Check out the RADA website picture when he was younger 🤭

forgivingfiggy · 25/11/2024 20:26

I find Mark Rylance as an actor a bit of a PITA but my god Cromwell would get it.

I had a crush on him from series one. Made watching Bing a bit weird, with Flop’s voice making me go weak at the knees.

ethelredonagoodday · 25/11/2024 20:28

Another fan here. Think he's brilliant.
