Crisp suggestions - flippin’ pringles

IAmNeverThePerson · 25/11/2024 14:35

Pringles have changed the recipe - they taste different apparently according to DS1. Not the mini tubes (they are still fine) but the big tubes.

The one type of crisp that DS1 likes are ready salted Pringles. He will eat walkers ready salted but doesn’t like them. Any suggestions of what else he might eat:

requirements:

  1. not spicy
  2. individual crisps not to large
  3. will not melt into teeth ( eg skips)

background:
He is autistic with associated food sensitivities he is currently stressing that people will think he is really weird when he goes university because he doesn’t eat crisps. I did point out that people might notice other traits before the crisps so I wasn’t sure this was the hill to die on. But heyho what do I know? 🤣

Help please.

Aldi and Lidl do their own versions of Pringles, would they be worth a try? I’ve not tried them but one or other of them is gluten free so DP has them occasionally as Pringles aren’t gluten free.

We are having a similar stress over Heinz changing the sausages in their beans! Why… it’s one of the only foods both of my DC will eat and DP can also have as they were gluten free. Now they aren’t :(

There's a brand of crisps I like called Pop or something. The texture is similar to pringles. I don't know if they do salted.
I will Google ....

+1 for Aldi own brand Pringles. They taste like Pringles used to.

This is what I was thinking of and I think Aldi/Lidl do their own versions.

Walkers ready salted Baked crisps? Not a tube but they have a similar taste, to me!

BearSoFair · 25/11/2024 14:45

He's right! I just said to DH at the weekend that the ready salted ones didn't taste like I remembered, they have a weird tang...almost 'fizzy' on the tongue for lack of a better word.

Needmorelego · 25/11/2024 14:46

I like the various makes of lentil crisps too which are similar ish.....

BarnacleBeasley · 25/11/2024 14:46

Those pop chips are nice but they do melt into your teeth. Nothing like pringles, but would he eat crinkle cut crisps? If so the Seabrooks ones are the best.

However. You might not want to mention this to DS, but 'I only eat one very specific brand of crisps' is more likely to attract attention than 'no thanks, I don't really like crisps'.

OAPapparently · 25/11/2024 14:47

Ready salted Frisps taste similar to me, and the tubes they sell in Iceland, I can’t remember what they are called, but they are a blatant Pringles copy.

IAmNeverThePerson · 25/11/2024 14:49

A pringles dupe - even better!

Needmorelego · 25/11/2024 14:49

@BarnacleBeasley yeah actually they are a bit melty 🙁
Plain flavourless corn snacks maybe (like Doritos).
Although those get stuck in my teeth.
Does anyone think Frazzles have changed too?

IAmNeverThePerson · 25/11/2024 14:51

thanks - we will get a selection and see.

It never occurred to me that a child wouldn’t like crisps. When he was little and we were sorting out his range of food I never thought crisps were something we would have to cover. 🤦‍♀️

@IAmNeverThePerson this is possibly the Iceland ones mentioned above.
(Careful with Frisps. They have been known to have a bit of a laxative effect 😱)

I just checked Iceland website - they are called Pop tastic!

My DS16 is also ND and relies on his ready salted crisps. He used to love Pringles, and I bought some the other day to give to him when I picked him up from college after being stuck waiting in the cold. I thought I was giving him a life saver, but when he ate the first one he said straight away that they were acidic like salt and vinegar. I tried one and absolutely they are completely different! Why oh why do the manufacturers do this??!!! Anyway, I bought some Aldi hula hoops for a try the other day and he likes them. The right amount of firm crunch and nice flavour. Try them OP. I do sympathise.

I agree. These taste the most similar to Pringles.

Those fake Pringles people are suggesting really don't taste like Pringles at all. The texture is a bit different too and off putting if you're expecting the Pringles texture.

I know that, you know that - however he has no clue. The key is he has the confidence to enter social situations. He is a great kid (I know I’m biased) he has lots of friends and gets on with almost everyone. However crisps aside, It is obviously to almost everyone that he marches to his own drum.

But if a tube of Aldi Pringles gets him to go into the room then a tube of Aldi Pringles he shall have.

OP, your DS is right. Mine is an adult now, with food sensitivities, and he spotted the change in the Ready Salted and Sour Cream and Chive Pringles immediately. He is not impressed!

harriethoyle · 25/11/2024 15:16

The Aldi dupe is really good @IAmNeverThePerson - also what about hula hoops? they fit your bill too I think.

CurbsideProphet · 25/11/2024 15:27

I really like Aldi pringles. Nice and crunchy. Their version of Squares are also really nice and crunchy.

Just in case this is useful to anyone, the Lidl Pringles type crisps used to be gluten free, but they have changed the recipe. They now have wheat in them. I am gutted, I loved the barbecue ones.

IAmNeverThePerson · 25/11/2024 16:39

why didn’t I think of hula hoops! I bet they are ok. Quavers might be ok as well.

OP posts:
SheilaFentiman · 25/11/2024 16:41

Quavers are more melty than Pringles. Hula hoops closer, I think.

DiscoBeat · 25/11/2024 16:54

They're horribly carcinogenic anyway! Aldi do some nice crisps in different seasonal flavors. They're really nice!

IAmNeverThePerson · 25/11/2024 22:07

Squares! I bet he’d like those too.
