Do any other countries grow Brussels Sprouts?

And if so, how do they cook them?

I can’t think of any recipes that feature sprouts other than U.K. Delia Jamie Nigella Christmas recipes. I’d be interested to see how they’re cooked in, say, Belgium.

They are very popular in the US, or at least in Boston. Deep fried Brussels sprouts is a fairly common appetiser.

Good grief! Is there anything they don’t deep fry over there? 😁

I love them halved and pan fried with garlic chilli and soy. Can’t remember whose recipe but it’s so yummy

We have them in Ireland too. Pan fried with bacon or chestnuts are nice, but my favourite is simmering them in the ham water until they’re soft….very old fashioned but so tasty.

BestIsWest · 24/11/2024 18:33

I had them in the summer as a side dish with a cataplana (fish and shellfish dish) in Portugal. Was most odd.
But I do love them.

BoobyDazzler · 24/11/2024 18:34

We had them today tossed in olive oil, rosemary, thyme, garlic and Parmesan and then 25 minutes of the air fryer. They were delicious!

No idea who else grows them bit if they don’t then they’re missing out. They’re my favourite!

Glittertwins · 24/11/2024 18:36

I've seen them on a lot of US restaurants' menus, from the less expensive ones right up to very expensive. Still can't stand them!!!!

Alphaalga · 24/11/2024 18:37

I find they go better with chicken than with beef, whatever the dish.

Cool threat btw. Thanks 👍

Ooh that sounds lovely, I do them with leeks, bacon and almonds - very moreish. Will try your recipe as I grow thyme and rosemary… sounds lush!

I had them in the Balkans (albeit at an Italian restaurant). Halved, par-boiled, then mixed with lemon, mint, olive oil and topped with feta as a topping for bruschetta.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 24/11/2024 18:45

We have them in Sweden. Often pan fried with lemon juice.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 24/11/2024 18:47

Google tells me that they're called Mekyabetsu/Cabbage Buds in Japanese.

Glazed in miso is nice, or you could do a spicy yakitori sauce (tamari/soy, sake, mirin, chilli), possibly shredding them to include in an omelette?

This thread is making me so hungry!

I’ve had them in Germany where they call them Rosenkohl, which I personally think makes them sound ten times tastier than Brussels Sprouts.

As far as I can see, no. We quite often had battered and deep fried slices of pickled gherkin as well. You can get deep fried butter on a stick and fried dough at fairs.

Chemenger · 24/11/2024 22:10

Some of these sprout recipes sound lovely. I like them raw as a snack.

Blimeyitscold · 24/11/2024 22:52

Wow, this has taken off. I will definitely try some of the recipes and thanks for the alternative names - I will google the recipes. Apart from the deep fried one.

Grow them? Sure! Total US production is around 32,000 tons with a value of $27 million. California grows about 90% of the US Brussel Spouts crop.

Will I actually eat them? Not on your big fat Nelly!

Previouslyasleep · 24/11/2024 23:05

The best way to eat Brussels sprouts is to get a big bowl of macaroni cheese and mix in Brussels sprouts, broccoli and pigs in blankets and some cracked black pepper

California grows 96% of them. New York comes in second at 1%.
Deep fried sound delicious - I haven’t had them that way.

I've got a French recipe somewhere for Brussel sprout puree. It's fabulous

Mars bars...

mathanxiety · 24/11/2024 23:44

Parboiled slightly, then halved, dried a bit, then browned on the cut side in bacon fat, with balsamic vinegar splashed in when they're browned.

mathanxiety · 24/11/2024 23:46

@magicstar1
I love them in ham water too (also Irish).
