I need ideas for repurposing the yellow plastic inner from Kinder eggs

We have about a hundred of those yellow plastic capsules that you find inside Kinder eggs. I am keen to get rid of them. Before they get chucked into landfill however, can anyone inspire me with ways of repurposing them? Thank you!

Keep for an Easter egg hunt to put those little chocolate or mini eggs on?

LisaJohnsonsFacebookMole · 24/11/2024 17:20

MINIONS!
Create your own minions. Re-enact the films or make a new one.

Write to Kinder returning them all with a letter asking them what they are doing about sustainability. Could they create biodegradable toys using corn starch or paper?

The capsule is made of Polypropylene (plastic number 5) which is recyclable but not all areas recycle this.

These capsules may be recyclable but the hard truth is: only 17% of plastics used in the UK are actually recycled; nearly two thirds (58%) of plastic waste is actually incinerated; 14% is dumped on developing countries; and the rest is chucked in landfill. 1.7 billion pieces of plastic are discarded in the UK every week.

We can't recycle our way out of the plastics crisis (which is what it is). We have to find alternatives as consumers, and pressure companies to stop using it so much.

@dotdotdotdash why is it only 17%? That's so low.

Nevergotdivorced · 24/11/2024 19:13

An egg race, like a duck race but with eggs.

MiriamCavendale · 24/11/2024 19:14

Just for December, stick a chocolate in some of them and write a number 1 - 24 on each one. Put them in a bucket and make a ‘find the number’ advent calendar. Then use them for crafts as suggested by others.

Sell them on marketplace. Very popular to drug dealers. 🧐😳

Are they expecting them to be full?

twentysevendresses · 24/11/2024 20:04

Erm...throw them away 🤷‍♀️

Blueuggboots · 24/11/2024 20:14

Drug dealers use them for secreting drugs in hard to discover places.....

leia24 · 24/11/2024 14:07

Maybe you could start smuggling drugs onto planes or into event venues as they're v popular for that purpose

Beat me to it 🤣

Could they not just buy some kinder eggs and get the chocolate too?

Thought that was condoms? Nobody wants half a Kinder Egg capsule stuck up their fanny.

It's usually both for double protection.

Nobody wants an accidentally broken container of speed or something up there 😬

TherebytheGraceofGodgoI · 24/11/2024 20:21

My DS has so many he has stuck them all together, cap of one attached to body of the next etc and made a garland in his bedroom.
I’ve taken a couple to house some disposable gloves in for the car and cycle in case of changing tyres.
The day he parts with them all, I’ll be taking them to the local community centre for their arts and crafts classes. (I also save ribbons/coloured paper/sweet wrappers etc for this purpose)

Blueuggboots · 24/11/2024 20:22

Prue Leith inspired necklace? Grin

@LisaJohnsonsFacebookMole, I think it’s to do with a shortage of processing facilities to sort and break down recyclable materials given the massive volumes we are discarding. It’s also to do with the prices of recycled plastic pellets compared to virgin plastic. If virgin plastic was taxed so it cost more, it wouldn’t be so attractive as a packaging product. Also loads of plastic can be contaminated so not suitable for recycling.

It was also decided but not much publicised that we’d try to deal with the problem by incinerating it or exporting it. Countries like Indonesia and Turkey have decided not to take our rubbish any more; so it’s piling up.

You can only recycle plastic a couple of times anyway so most of it is going to be discarded before long.

A bit of speed up there might help me get my mojo back.

Alas, I'm unwilling to test it.

PainterInPeril · 24/11/2024 21:36

@seasonofmellowfruitfulness Use them to store herbs and spices. With the amount you have you could buy up one of each packet in the supermarket!😂

VegTrug · 24/11/2024 23:08

Keep pills in them when going away.

VegTrug · 24/11/2024 23:10

dotdotdotdash · 24/11/2024 15:55

I know this is closing the stable door after the horse has bolted but I suggest you stop buying them and everyone on the thread boycotts them too. Write to Kinder returning them all with a letter asking them what they are doing about sustainability. Could they create biodegradable toys using corn starch or paper?

🙄🙄🙄 Grow up!

I was once at a school Fasching party and they were used as eggs in an egg and spoon race. See if a school could use them.

Did nobody else wonder what a school Fasching party is? Or did you all have Fasching parties?

dotdotdotdash · 25/11/2024 08:07

VegTrug · 24/11/2024 23:10

🙄🙄🙄 Grow up!

I'm glad my post bothers you @VegTrug ; at least you're paying attention. Single use plastic is a serious problem for the environment and human health. Microplastics have been found in nearly all parts of the human body and can be linked to higher rates of health problems like cardiovascular disease.

Bananalanacake · 25/11/2024 09:53

Fasching is a German dressing up thing, bit like World Book Day,
(my phone wanted to write Fascist but I'm a keen proofreader).

CarrotPencil · 25/11/2024 10:00

I’d put them on local Facebook eco page and someone would snap them up for a nursery/care home/school craft etc I’m sure.

seasonofmellowfruitfulness · 26/11/2024 07:23

Thank you all for your creativity. Whilst loving the idea of making a stop go animation of minions I think the most pressing need is to get the house tidy! Off to the recycling they go.
