What gift to take as a house guest?

19yo DD who is at uni is going to meet her boyfriends (widowed) Dad just before Christmas and has been invited to stay at his house for a couple of days. DD says she feels she should take the dad a gift, but doesn't know what. I suggested flowers, but apparently the three brothers will find that hilarious, as in their opinion men don't receive flowers. Due to health reasons the usual food and alcohol gifts aren't appropriate. DH and I are stumped! (I'd go with flowers myself).
I also suggested chocolates for the brothers to share, but apparently the dad gets grumpy when they eat things he shouldn't.

Flowers are fine. She is just saying thank you for letting me stay. They won’t be in the house forever, so completely appropriate. Also, flowers aren’t just for women- the father may really appreciate them, as clearly he doesn’t buy them himself.

Or a plant?

Or nice non alcoholic drink?

A bottle of good quality hot sauce ( borrowing this from This Is Us)

MyMagicStars · 24/11/2024 09:42

A poinsettia and some nice oranges?

Obeseandashamed · 24/11/2024 09:43

A Xmas cactus is a great idea and perhaps some Xmas biscuits if that fits with the health situation. If not, I would take a candle/reed diffuser or something like that which is inoffensive and needs no commitment. X

Could she ask her boyfriend if they'd play a board game? Like uno extreme or something

Mumistiredzzzz · 24/11/2024 09:44

A Christmas poinsettia

Commonsenseisnotsocommon · 24/11/2024 09:47

A nice plant, a bottle of port and a nice selection of crackers for cheese.

He must still eat food though. Find out what!

I've seen a photo of him - he definitely eats food!

What can he eat - cheese board, charcuterie board etc? Coffee or tea hamper style present?

CrazyHorse · 24/11/2024 10:50

Much as I love her, DD can be a bit prickly at times, IMO. I don't want a Christmas cactus to turn into a family joke in the future.

I'm super fussy about my coffee, so not sure if that's the way to go.

A poinsettia is inoffensive for a man, surely! I'm going to suggest that to DD. I'll let you know what she thinks. (she is so stressing about this visit!)
