Snoring (me)

Posted on Health but it’s dropped down unanswered… As the title says…. I’m 51, menopausal and could do with shifting a couple of stone. I have allergies and take an antihistamine everyday. DH has said I’ve been snoring really loudly - I’ve woken myself up on quite a few I occasions 😳. Will losing weight help (as well as for other health reasons)? I think I breathe through my mouth at night which I believe doesn’t help. Anything else I can do?? Feel very embarrassed, bad for DH and it’s putting me off going away with friends ☹️.

My DH was a terrifically loud snorer. He lost 2 stone and now never snores (except for when he's had a couple of beers).

Wow that’s amazing, and I bet you’re pleased!

Go to the GP and get tested for obstructive sleep apnea. Once I got treated for this, it changed my life and I haven't snored since!

@SuperDupe What was the treatment if you don’t mind me asking?

It's a CPAP used overnight. It has honestly changed my life. I sleep so much better and am less tired, less irritable, never get up during the night.

I had a sleep study that showed I was stopping breathing upto 100 times an hour and my oxygen levels were very low at times.

It's worth ruling out at the very least. Your GP will do a questionnaire with you and refer if over a certain score

The extra weight from your chins and throat push against your throat making your breathing obstructed
That's how it was explained to my friend who saw a specialist, had to loose weight and use a cpap which makes it's own weird noises and leaves imprints on her face well into the afternoon .

Such a frustrating problem. After much time looking for a solution I found mouth tape did the trick - maybe some v quiet snores but nothing else. If you mouth breathe should work

Losing weight definitely helps. I also used a mouthguard-expensive and had to be made by a dentist. Not many people can cope with using one. I had to use a ton of mind over matter and adapt. Was life changing.

Edited

My CPAP is completely silent and doesn't disturb me or my DH. My mask doesn't make imprints either, but is fully adjustable.

I know the difference it makes to my health however....lower BP, better heart health, more alert, far less fatigue, not up every 90 minutes during the night, lower risk of stroke.

My DH is also enjoying the benefits of more sleep 🙂

@SuperDupe my friends cpap makes s click sound and her face has imprints from the strap of the mask ..... I'll let her know you don't have the same issues?! Thanks for that insight .
