The Range - return poilcy now 14 days not 28 days

Just thought I'd let everyone knows as drove hour round trip today to return some items which I now have to keep. A sign on the desk saying the return period was 14 from 28 days - it's really pissed me off. Not even allowed an exchange or a gift card. In a word: crap.

Was it on the receipt when you bought it? If not I'd complain

dementedpixie · 23/11/2024 18:58

I'm guessing you bought them instore? Legally they don't have to offer refunds/exchanges for items bought instore unless they are faulty.

If bought online you have a longer period for returning them

dementedpixie · 23/11/2024 19:02

By law you have a total of 28 days to return an item bought online. It's 14 days to inform of the return and then another 14 days to return it.

If they are saying it's only 14 days in total then they are wrong

From .gov site

Online, mail and phone order sales
Online, mail and telephone order customers have the right to cancel their order for a limited time even if the goods are not faulty. Sales of this kind are known as ‘distance selling’.

You must offer a refund to customers if they’ve told you within 14 days of receiving their goods that they want to cancel. They have another 14 days to return the goods once they’ve told you.
You must refund the customer within 14 days of receiving the goods back. They do not have to provide a reason.

It was an in store purchase and I thought 28 days return was standard everywhere so I didn't even think to look at the receipt. Given that there was sign on the counter stating the change it looked like they'd just brought it in. I thought they might have had a grace period to give people a chance to see ity while purchasing things as I imagine I won't be only one who'll be caught out. There wasn't a sign on the counter when I bought them.

That not good if they aren't complying with distance selling regulations

I imagine the sign in store refers to in store purchases.

A quick google reveals the return period was 14 days back in January last year.

So it looks like it's been like that a good while?

You get a total of 28 days for online orders though, not 14. 14 days to tell them you're returning it and 14 to return the item

Fair enough - I just didn't think a 14 day return period existed. So pissed off that I bought things from them as there are no stores near me - there was no way I could make the drive back to the store in 14 days. Weirdly the assistant I spoke to in the shop said they'd changed the return timescales so that together with the sign led me to think it must be a recent thing. If anyone wants three big yellow cushions ... 😬

You have no right to return just because you’ve changed your mind.

dementedpixie · 23/11/2024 19:31

@Forgott or you could contact their customer care within 14 days and then have the full amount of time to return instore

SnapdragonToadflax · 23/11/2024 19:33

I had this with In The Style recently. I'm so used to 28 days to return, I waited until I had a few packages and planned to take them all to the post office the same day.

Now I'm stuck with two pairs of jeans and a jumper that don't fit 🙄

Did you know that there's no right to return things for no reason? 28 days is a very generous period for something a shop isn't obliged to do, I know M and S put return dates on their receipts, anywhere else I'd take it back within a week to avoid any issues.
