Is this even legal?

I have nightmare neighbours. We share a drive and they absolutely take the piss. They never leash their dogs so there’s always shit all over my drive which they ‘forget’ to pick up. During summer they put a massive old campervan in their only parking spot. Except they deliver parcels, so now they get parcel deliveries daily that are dumped all over the shared drive. The van that delivers them blocks the drive and then drops parcels all over it. It then takes them hours to move the parcels. If I’m in they block me in to sort the parcels out and load them in the van. If I’m out, they park on my drive despite being asked not to.

its awful, we’ve had arguments about it. I’ve complained to the shared landlord who has completely ignored the problem. Except they’ve now moved a random person into the campervan. He clearly has a drinking problem as I’ve seen him drinking as early as 8am. And now he’s living there, on the drive. Is this legal? The landlords are aware of the situation and seemed shocked, but again they've not done anything to rectify the situation. I’ve told the landlord I want to leave because of this family, but houses are hard to find where I live and expensive. And I love my house, I just hate these nightmare neighbours!

Sounds blinking awful! Hope you get some helpful advice, responses.

WellingTonBooty · 24/11/2024 13:34

@Freeyourminds thank you. It’s completely miserable but it doesn’t look like I’m getting any answers on here so not sure what I can do :(

I suggest you have a discussion with the council. Start with Environmental Health.

Womblewife · 24/11/2024 13:39

Honestly I would just look to move. These people are nuts. Also, keep writing complaints to the landlord, the council and environmental health - keep copies of everything a tell landlord you are reporting illegal activity to the local authority as they shouldn’t have someone living on the property like that. Remind landlord if this drunk bloke does anything his insurance will not be valid as he is not on tenancy agreement .

Womblewife · 24/11/2024 13:40

Just to add I would be telling the neighbour straight, I will park on top of anything in my drive !

Trumptonagain · 24/11/2024 14:01

Not really on topic but with so many people now using their own private vehicles to deliver parcels I often wonder if they've thought as to whether their insurance is the correct type.

I know with mine my car can only be used for social, domestic or pleasure...and is not to be used for business or commuting to work.

Yes.If l was in your situation, l’d get some legal advice, citizens advice, point you in the right direction or assist you with this completely. This is such a difficult situation, as you know, not something you can deal with on your own.Really feel for you.

WellingTonBooty · 24/11/2024 14:24

@Womblewife ive been looking for months but things here go so quickly it’s almost impossible.

I hadn’t even thought about insurance! I assume mine will be ok because I’m parked on my drive, but I do worry about their things hitting my car.

I don’t run over the parcels because I’m aware they belong to someone who doesn’t deserve it, but I know other neighbours have in the past :)

It’s not that easy to move.OP doesn’t own the property, has mentioned a landlord, who owns both properties, who’s ignoring that there are problems not offering any solutions.

I can’t afford to buy and moving is incredibly difficult where I live due to demand for rentals. The shared drive wasn’t an issue for the first few years, it’s only a recent thing in the last year or so. I thought the shared drive would be fine since we all have our own designated parking spots

If you are renting, just move, what are you waiting for? It may be hard to find somewhere but you will. The main benefit to renting is mobility, make the most of it! Stay positive, it will work out and you will be free from your neighbour and landlord.

WellingTonBooty · 24/11/2024 17:36

@1457bloom ive repeatedly said, houses in my area are in massive demand so I’ve been trying to move but not managed to find anywhere. Most houses don’t even get onto websites before they’re rented out. Last time I was looking, they wouldn’t even show me houses unless I had sold my house and was ready to proceed. I can’t afford to buy In the area because it’s so expensive

If its a shared drive where you have ROW then it should never be blocked.

When you say shared LL do they own and rent both properties?

I'd either be flinging the dog shite back into their garden or taking pictures and getting EH involved coping your LL in on any correspondence.

iamawarriorwhojustcrieseasily · 24/11/2024 17:48

I work in an area which deals with similar issues.

You need to begin a log of anti social behaviour, take pictures and videos ( as much evidence as you can ) and send to council, environmental health, and your landlord. You need to give them what they need to build a case against them to justify behaviour contracts, and other enforcement action. Simply complaining to them isn't enough, because they can't do much without evidence, and they don't have the capacity to get it themselves. By the sounds of it, you wont have an issue getting enough though!

Good luck, its horrendous i know. Just keep at it, but in the right direction.

iamawarriorwhojustcrieseasily · 24/11/2024 17:49

PS - Your landlord may start to move on things to avoid you going through council, when he realises he may have an issue selling the property in the future if he doesn't!

1457bloom · 24/11/2024 18:37

It must be possible to find somewhere to rent, just compromise even if it means moving to a slightly different area. It really annoys me when people who are renting complain about their place. When you move so easily.

1457bloom · 24/11/2024 18:38

When you can move so easily.

WellingTonBooty · 24/11/2024 19:11

@1457bloom i can’t move easily, I’ve explained that. Even if I could find a place to live (I’m trying and can’t) it will cost hundreds if not thousands for deposits and removal trucks etc. compromising where we live won’t work for my job, the kids school, activities etc. it’s not as simple as saying oh I’m moving.

@iamawarriorwhojustcrieseasily that’s really helpful thank you! I put up security cameras so have lots of evidence already. I’ll get started on it.

@Trumptonagain he and I both rent from the same person but the landlord doesn’t live in either of the houses :)

Have you seen the rental market today!
It not easy to just move. It’s hasn’t been in the renters favour for years now.Landlords can pick and choose, because rentals are in high demand for every property available, there’s a queue of people.
This is op’s home, just because they rent doesn’t mean they haven’t invested money in the property, have connections in the area What l don’t get is the lack of understanding, of how difficult it can be for renters today, if op moved realistically the rent could be higher and property smaller.

1457bloom · 24/11/2024 20:11

I work in property. I looked at a rental flat the other day full of mould. The tenant had been there for 10 years and was complaining about the landlord. I couldn't believe how dumb he was, just move if you don't like it, you don't own the stupid place.

1457bloom · 24/11/2024 20:12

Maybe you are paying half the current normal rent for your place and that is the reason you won't move?

In every single local market across England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland? So you know it all huh. You're complaining about someone else's intelligence when you can't seem to grasp the fact that rental markets differ in different locations. In some places supply outstrips demand in others there is more demand then supply, it's very very basic economics.

WellingTonBooty · 24/11/2024 21:35

@1457bloom wrong again, I’m paying the average for the area (which is extremely expensive compared to most areas in the U.K.) not sure why you’re being so rude? You don’t happen to share a drive and deliver parcels for a living do you?
