Hello, I am giving a gift to a friend who is Polish and is teaching her son Polish.

It's a den building kit and I'm going to put it in a really useful box. One side will say

Daves den building kit. And the other

Daves zestaw do budowy jaskini

(Changed name for anonymity)

Is this right? Thanks!

My husband is polish he said jaskini means cave. But he thinks it will come across right and said when they were little they called a den a tent. X

Ah. This is helpful. So maybe I need to change the word den? Thank you so much.

Have you tried Google translate or chat GPT free version?

Yes, this was done with Google translate. But you sometimes lose the nuances, like den comes out as cave. So I wanted to check with someone who can point out those nuances!

Thanks though.

Not a Polish speaker but did you include ´Dave’s’ when you translated the phrase? You should. Polish is not going to show possession in the same way English does, with ´s after the owner’s name.

Hmm. No. Good point.

I can't help with the Polish and I honestly am not saying this to be mean but do include the possessive apostrophe in the English bit, e.g.

Dave's box
Poppy's pencil case
Ben's football

I think this is such a lovely gift idea BTW.

AlwaysFreezing · 23/11/2024 10:15

Yes, I will. I was just being brief here!

So, it will have Davesa at the end instead of at the beginning.

I want the translation to be right otherwise it won't help with Dave learning both languages!

I can't help you with the Polish words, but I wanted to write that you seem like a very thoughtful and kind friend!

biedrona · 23/11/2024 21:52

it;s correct - I am Polish

AlwaysFreezing · 24/11/2024 08:19

Thanks everyone! I'm considering not applying the cricut stickers and printing both the Polish word for tent and den (or cave) and letting my friend decide!

Appreciate all of your help.

If anything, it should be Zestaw do budowy jaskini Dave’a.

the name shouldn’t be at the beginning, the syntax is different. Also, the names decline - and not always with an apostrophe. For instance, if the name is Mark, it would be Marka. If it’s a Polish name, it would need to be declined the Polish way.

Yep, I understand that the name needs to be at the end. The name is Polish (in full, but the shortening isn't.) And he goes by the shortening in England. So I'm going to use the shortened version on the English side and the full name on the Polish side, having put it though Google translate with with full name.

And I'm not going to put the stickers on so if my friend would like something slightly different (see the cave vs tent thing upthread) I can always print it out again the way she wants.

Really pleased I asked and didn't just rely on Google translate! Thanks everyone.
