Climate change - is the issue now boiling down to the conflict between the developing world and the devloped??

So COP29 seems to be all about the money. More precisely how much developed countries can give to developing countries to mitigate climate change. The problem to my mind is that the climate change global human threat is being used as means for poorer countries to bring up a general grievance that developed countries are richer and questioning this fairness.

Developing countries often with large populations and large birth rates want their people to enjoy the same economic advantages as those in the developed world and this invariably means the use of fossil fuels. There may be some mitigatiin in terms of some sustainable power development in the developing world but has and oil needs are going to be high too.

Should the developing world look to how that can develop their societies and economies more sustainably first before asking for 300 billion dollars?

The entire CC nonsense is a giant con.

It just seems to be moving on from science and is now an attempt for the developing world to ask for compensation for the developed world for the effects of climate change. It may not be about prevention but basically a request for a massive donation to the developing world (not a loan).

Could the developing world not raise money on bond markets like other countries do? For instance if a country wishes to produce solar farms they increase public borrowing to invest?

It was only ever about extracting wealth.

I lost interest after seeing that we sent almost 500 delegates to a country, presumably in a lot of aircraft to get together and lectures us plebs on saving CO2 and the planet. In the UK we only produce 1% of global carbon emissions, several countries didn't bother to attend. The majority of us have neither the space or funds for a heat pump system. We spent our pension lump sums on trying to future proof , downsized, new doors, windows, solar panels and batteries. The folk I know who "worry" most absolutely cc,are the ones that have new bedding every 6 months, lots of holidays including long haul, bottled water. Yes, I think it's more about money.

I agree OP. I saw the banners on this article this morning https://www.theguardian.com/environment/live/2024/nov/23/cop29-talks-go-into-overtime-as-countries-wrangle-over-finance-deal-live-coverage and I thought 'Uh oh', so now it's all about them vs. us and demanding we (in the so called 'global north') start pumping billions into the developing world in climate reparations. The whole thing and all these COPs are starting to have the reek of a massive con and a way to fleece developed countries (all of whom are facing big problems currently with CoL, aging infrastructure, aging populations, etc). Holding the damn things in places like Dubai and Azerbaijan is ludicrous in the first place, they're just junkets now. Nothing worthwhile gets decided and the biggest polluters stay away.

Cop29 live: talks into overtime as Greta Thunberg says people in power ‘about to agree to death sentence’

The talks in Azerbaijan have seen nations at odds over how much money developed countries should provide to poorer ones

The entire CC nonsense is a giant con.

Why do you think this? I am interested to understand this view better.

mids2019 · 23/11/2024 12:51

It's not about climate change denial but agreeing the agenda has moved on from prevention to compensation.

It is the developing world that will be disproportionately impacted and so the CoPs are now about the compensation and it is now descending into a demand from thr developed North (Europe and the US) for cash.

China and Russia aren't seeming to be playing ball and the US under Trump are just going to ignore this. I really do not see what there should be a significant UK presence at thses events

But that is an entirely valid argument. Their populations have just as much right to a good standard of living as we do, they just happen to be having their industrial revolution 150 years later than we did. Part of that is often due to western powers occupying them and removing their natural resources at that time. So if we want them to not burn fossil fuels, it's up to us as the richer countries to provide them alternative means. It's hypocritical that the industrialised countries caused this mess but then tell others they can't do the same.

For the developing world to improve their economies their carbon footprint will increase. There is an inevitability about this.
.
The developing world will be lagging behind developed nations in such things as electric vehicles and will rely on petrol vehicles.
.
This is not an argument why there should be a large cash injection into such nations.
