Children in need....falling popularity?

So children in need seems to be raising less money in recent years. Is this due to the cost of living crisis meaning people give less or are people jaded by this annual event? Are people giving to more local charities instead?

Personally I feel the whole thing though raising money for some good causes does seem to be a vehicle for celebrities profiles and there is a feeling the event showcases the most heartening emotive cases which maybe isn't quite balanced.

I also have question a about schools coercing children to give a pound or 2 towards the event as even at a young age charity should be about choice. It also means you feel you have given if your kids have paid a line to non uniform day and I don't know if that is quite the sun c. In n are thinking about?

Should we think again about children in need?

I work for a small local charity and the biggest cost to us is salaries and overheads. It’s unavoidable.
However we provide a free service to our beneficiaries that is outstanding. Our management are experienced and paid well for it, why shouldn’t they be - they have a huge level of responsibility. (They’re certainly not on £100k but for the bigger charities that doesnt seem that unreasonable to me.)

There are potential funders out there that we can’t apply to because they won’t give money to cover staff/business costs, which is terriblly short sighted of them. We could be expanding our service with the extra money but they want to see something more tangible. But without the staff who is going to provide the service? This extends to the admin, marketing team etc.

I always wonder as well, how people think admin costs ought to be funded? These things aren't free and they're not optional.

I dont like it never donated to it it goes on for far to long for one night and it's a massive farce as well. It's to old fashioned now and the money raised does not go where it should it goes into big fat cats pockets. I've never watched it or donated to it

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 14/11/2025 21:21

It hasn't been the same since Terry Wogan passed on. He was the driving force behind it all I think.

We haven't watched it for several years.

SparklyBiscuit · 14/11/2025 21:56

Yes it's always been about that I turn it of every year I dont watch or do I donate to it never have done never will do

TooBigForMyBoots · 14/11/2025 23:29

I've not watched it for years, but I'm glad it's still going. It gives money, publicity and impetus to local charities as well as giving those working in the third sector a chance to meet up and share knowledge. It is pretty good for connection.😊

Is it perfect?
No. But nothing is perfect.🤷‍♀️

In the round I think it is better to have CIN than not.

BBC and the abuse there puts me off they should never have access to any children let alone vulnerable or sick children. I hate the parading of sick children to raise money it’s exploitation I don’t agree with that and haven’t watched it for years. There are thousands of kids Needing support I agree and I do give money for things but they shouldn’t need to do videos or visit the studio to raise money.
This and Red Nose Day are very outdated now and more to hype up the celebrities hosting the event. they should change it up. I also hate schools all asking for money from each family when there are so many people that can’t really afford to pay but feel like they have to.
It’s like giving homeless people a sandwich and filming them for your social media 🤔

I basically never watch TV anymore and have no interest in most celebs so I wasn't even aware of it happening.

There are just so many charities nowadays, it must be very difficult to compete for donations. I also think the charity telethon format has had its day and the BBC has definitely been tarnished by Saville etc.

Its been done to death. When Wogan died that was a good time to let it go.
Donations will keep going down. They should axe it now. I think people are suspicious as to where the money goes too.

The celebs presenting get paid. Do they donate that fee to charity??? Do they heck . It’s a grim money grab. Yours not theirs obviously 🙄
