What can I eat post COVID with no sense of taste?

I've been existing on toast and cups of tea while sick with covid, I'm gradually recovering and can feel something of an appetite coming back but my sense of taste is severely off, things either taste odd or of nothing.
I'm not sure what to try to eat? I need some nutritious food to build my strength up again (feel week as a kitten).
Not sure whether to go for bland food still or stronger tastes to try to get my taste buds working a bit?
What did you eat when recovering from COVID?
Today I had some chicken and veg soup which was ok.

I ate a piece of chocolate earlier and couldn't taste it at all, it was really weird

I found that citrus flavours managed to get through and I could feel the heat of spice even if I could not taste it. So I regularly found myself dousing my meals in lime and chilli sauce post COVID

Yeah I was wondering about some Indian spiced food. Maybe a simple spinach and potato curry.

My DH got COVID for the first time beginning of October.
The one and only long-lasting symptom he still has, nearly two months later, is that his sense of taste is still not completely back to normal.
My DH never stopped eating what the rest of us were eating, he eats everything that he wants to very very slowly his taste might be coming back.
He says he can smell fresh garlic and coffee brewing!
I wouldn't advise babying your taste buds I mean you have to eat what you normally would to keep your strength up.
Just because you can't taste it doesn't mean it's not nutritious for your body.
It's no fun not being able to taste anything, but what would be the point of eating things that taste bland anyway?
Just eat what you want and I would recommend is putting some spices in your food.
I cook with a lot of spices and the spicier the food, the more DH says he thinks he can taste it.
Hope your sense of taste returns quickly for you.

I like curries when I have Covid. The worst thing was porridge.

I lost my taste and smell from Covid. I did a bit of home devised rehab - 4 or 5 times a day I sniffed and tasted all the different things I could think of. I thought if I kept showing my brain what it should do, it would eventually get it. Over the course of about 8 weeks it all went back to normal.

That's very interesting!

I haven't had a cup of coffee in two weeks, normally I'm a coffee addict. It just tastes sour and horrible at the moment

Gorgeleaper (great name), good point re not babying the taste buds. Probably the more I keep eating a range of flavours the quicker they'll come back to normal

I lived off buttered toast with marmite. I got the salty taste. I also lived off frosties cereal getting the sweet taste.

I found spicy and pickled flavours broke through, so hotter curries than you would usually choose and things like piccalilli, bizarre choices but it helped! My sense of taste suddenly seemed to reset after having to deal with stronger flavours...

OccasionalHope · 23/11/2024 00:20

Try interesting textures to break up the monotony.

Hopefully it won’t last too long, It is weird, isn’t it, a complete absence of the sense of taste.

I enjoyed the Tesco chocolate with salted pretzel because I could detect the salt and sweet flavours but not much else!

My sense of taste came back after about 2 weeks, but it’s been about 2.5 months now and smells are still not quite right. My perfume smells weird and I can’t tell if milk is off anymore Sad

Are you taking a zinc supplement? Take a since supplement and see if it helps. Google it and research. I think the first time I took since I became unwell. I think I did it on an empty stomach and I think you need food in your belly. Try a little bit of a zinc supplement and see if that helps to bring back smelly.

I was snorting all sorts of stuff in the weeks after my first covid . I found the loss of taste and smell the most distressing aspect of covid when I first had. Only lasted a few weeks but still. Never experienced loss of taste and smell the second time.

Greybottle · 23/11/2024 18:33

I remember I developed a rage at the kettle when I lost taste and smell with covid. A rage that would put a hurricane to shame. Because tea was like warm water and I wasn't able to enjoy anything.

Jellycoconut · 23/11/2024 20:14

Interesting about taking zinc supplement, I'll try that.
