Is there one that is best for the UK or a particular brand to look for, e.g. AA?

Any tips about them? Other than to know how to read a map of course.

I need to have a wider mental map of my journey.I always feel uneasy relying entirely on satnav because as others have said, this can lead to massive and unnecessary detours.

I always have one in the car, a big scaled one. Remember they only last a year or two as roads are changed, new bypasses added etc.

Re: dial phones. 999 was chosen as the emergency number as it took the longest to dial due to the wait for it go all the way back to 0 and gave the panicking person time to breathe and calm down. Well that's what my parents told me when I pointed out how daft it seemed and wouldn't 111 make more sense.

Back in the mid-90s I had to show some friends of my mum how to get from Shrewsbury to Ironbridge. We had a carrier bag of maps, and I delved into it for the one I knew covered the area. I was just showing them the pretty way via Attingham Park when the husband said "Where's the M54?"

Ah. I had to explain that the map predated said road (opened in 1975). But I reassured them that the route I was recommending was definitely still there!

Philips navigator camping and caravan map for us.
Driving a motorhome using sat nav can get us in a pickle with narrow roads, low bridges etc.
So we use sat nav but I keep check on the paper map rather than lose our roof or wing mirrors!

There are low railway bridges here and it's not unusual to see tall vans stuck under them.
