Trousers for skinny toddler?

Average height 3 year old is wearing Next trousers, age 18-24mths. The legs are too short but the waist is fine. I have the next size up, age 2-3, but although the leg length is fine the waist is enormous. I would say there are a couple of spare inches! Too much to be tightened with the drawstring anyway.
What high street price brands cater to average height kids with really small waists? Needs to be elasticated rather than buttons etc as he uses the toilet himself and struggles with buttons.

Tu at Sainsbury's always used to be pretty slender round the waist, also M&S.

reluctantbrit · 22/11/2024 17:04

Have you looked at girls trousers? I found that they are cut smaller.

LochNessy · 22/11/2024 17:25

We have the same problem with skinny ds, he’s nearly 3 and in 12-18 month for waist but ideally 3-4 for length.
I have to take them in regardless, but as ds is my second skinny tall child I feel I have a good assessment of where fits the best.
next, Tesco, and bizarrely primark are the best, and I would especially avoid George at Asda

You can get some trousers with adjustable waists. There's elastic with different button holes. They're normally on jeans and cords. That should help.

InTheRainOnATrain · 22/11/2024 18:00

Next slim fit

CurbsideProphet · 22/11/2024 18:02

We have the same problem with DS aged 2. Boys trousers aged 2-3 are massive around the waist on him. Our solution has been for my mum to kindly take in the waists! TU are more slim. Asda seem massive.

wateraddict · 22/11/2024 18:04

La Redoute comes up slim, I always found next to be really generous.

Inchysaurus · 22/11/2024 19:22

Mine is the same. I add an elastic around the waist where the drawstring bit is and stitch it up so the trousers are still easy to pull down and up. You may need to unstitch a vertical line at the back as a lot of trousers stitch the drawstring at the back to stop it from getting pulled out. (If that makes sense!)

Moonlightstars · 22/11/2024 19:23

Gap used to be good for this

DanceMoveGrooveAndShoutIt · 22/11/2024 19:32

Same problem. Next are the only ones that seem slim but I think they are just slightly smaller sizing generally for kids as the length gets too short too soon!

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 22/11/2024 19:35

Polarn o pyret they have adjustable waists

BecuaseIWantItThatWay · 22/11/2024 19:36

French brands are generally smaller, try Petit Bateau, it's a good all round brand.

citybumpkin · 22/11/2024 19:40

H&M slim/skinny fit jeans and trousers. My DD is on the slim side and they fit great. They also come with adjustable waist band.

BendingSpoons · 22/11/2024 19:57

I am surprised to see Tu mentioned. DD had skirts from there that literally dropped off! She is currently age 8 and wearing age 5 longer length school skirts from Tu. DS is 5 and wearing age 3-4 longer length girl's school trousers. I found leggings better, although they might not be your preference.

LochNessy · 22/11/2024 20:26

@BendingSpoons i agree, we find tu come up wide and short! Not as bad as Asda but still definitely cut larger!

Wibblywobblybobbly · 22/11/2024 20:28

Lindex are great for this. Their leggings have buttons in the waist so you can adjust them smaller. Their brushed ones are cosy for winter.

Completelyjo · 22/11/2024 20:31

Most of the next leggings my DD has and H&M have adjustable waists.

I agree TU is huge, I can’t believe some people think they fit small.

I've not found that about M&S at all. They've traditionally been very generously sized. Their leggings and shorts literally fall right down on my 3 year old.

H&M and Nutmeg tend to be better I've found but still too big generally on the waist. Mine is ready for 4-5 now but I'm just putting up with too short legs at the moment!

MightySnail · 23/11/2024 08:43

Thank you all very much.
I've looked at the size guides on all the suggestions and they are mostly the same as Next unfortunately. The slim fit in Next and H&M looks much better but they only do school trousers, cords in slim fit, and we just want joggers really.
The only brands with skinnier measurements are the French ones so looks like we are going continental!

I know I could take them in, but there is so much else to do I'd rather keep this as a last resort!

H&M girls leggings have the buttons on the waist to narrow it, we used them for my skinny boy. He still prefers leggings to joggers.
Du pareil au même (DPAM) in France is super slim!

deeeyewhy · 23/11/2024 08:48

We struggled with this at those sizes. 2-3 year old trousers are obviously designed assuming the wearer is still in nappies - mine were not so the trousers were huge in the bum / waist.
Once in age 4+ trousers, the problem was less of an issue.
