Would you find it rude if asked about your salary

Would you find it rude if someone were to ask you what your salary is? If so, why?

Personally, I don't have an issue if someone asked me but because it's a cultural norm to not, I'd think 'oh that's taken me by surprise' ...

I do wonder when or how this became a cultural norm..

I would ask and I would tell. We need to be open about these things.

Only ever if you were in the same industry/job role as a friend and you were talking in an open way about employment opportunities. Like, I'm on X for doing y at Acme, what about you? Then it's more of a comparison. Not nosy or competitive. But ultimately it is intrusive. I'd volunteer my own before I'd ever ask someone else's. And even then at this point it would be a redundant question. I meekly tell people I'm on benefits. Some people do actually ask how much. I always just get embarrassed at that point.

Well it depends who it is surely. A friend within a convo - sure, I couldn’t care less. The window cleaner probably not.

It’s not rude or wrong to know others salary. Keeping their secret has led to women being underpaid for years.

In some countries companies have to publish salaries. I’d like to see the same here

Toddlerteaplease · 22/11/2024 16:02

No, I've never had a problem
With it. It's a standard NHS salary. So easy to find out any way.

Cynic17 · 22/11/2024 16:04

Yes. There is no reason why anyone else would need to know. I never even asked my husband what he earned (pre-retirement), nor would he ask me.

NameChange2589 · 22/11/2024 16:10

Depends who’s asking and the context. My decision on whether to answer or not will also be influenced by what I perceive their intention to be.

I’m nhs ….so easy for anyone to check my salary as my job role is a certain band…so no it wouldn’t bother me

hesline · 22/11/2024 16:16

Yes it's rude and I don't discuss finances with anyone except DH. I always wonder how people get detailed information about friends and neighbour's finances for some of the threads here!

FaceLikeACrackedScreen · 22/11/2024 17:40

Mine is published in both R&A and on a webpage, so no, I don't have an issue with it.

AgnesX · 22/11/2024 17:44

I'd be extremely surprised but it depends on who it was that was asking. My role is generic so the rough amount is no secret.
