Exhaust is really rattling! Is it OK to drive; could anyone advise please? It’s loud at low speed but not at 40 or above

It’s just the outer casing of the silencer. Fine to drive but I’d be looking to get the exhaust replaced ASAP

Thank you! My googling suggested the heat shield but I think that is the silver bit to the right?

So will the outer bit drop off at some point? It looks like it’s cracked right through!

What kind of loud? Loud like there's a hole in the exhaust or loud like it's rattling a lot?

I would have thought that's only the outer casing as well, but couldn't be certain. It's drivable but I recommend driving it to the garage.

Even with a hole in the exhaust, it won't need a tow. It'll affect the performance but not dangerously.

Not like a hole - it’s a low rattle which is noticeable going over bumps but not on straight/smooth. It’s not that deafening noise that you get when the whole thing is jiggered

Th car is half an hour away which is logistically very complicated

fine yo drive to a garage to get it checked and repaired.

It could be fine. It might be as simple as some loose rusty metal knocking against something else. But without having a mechanic look at it to find what exactly is causing the noise, it's impossible to say of course.

You might be able to get a local garage to collect it, if that's your logistical issue. A breakdown company will charge you loads for an unnecessary tow, but a local place might do it cheap if it isn't far.

I would happily drive that 30 mins (or more) to get back home or a to a garage. I wouldn't keep driving around for weeks in it.

Thanks everyone; very helpful. I’m going to get a lift out to get it and drive it home myself (garage is round the corner from us) rather than have my DD drive it
