Icy pavements

Managed to take a very ungraceful dive this morning on an icy pavement. Any recommendations for footwear to help me feel more steady? I was looking at those things you put over your shoes but wasn't sure if they would help on smooth icy pavements, most seem more marketed for snowy weather?

I'm already a bit nervy of falling because I've got a dodgy hip so any tips welcome!

It’s awful isn’t it? I slipped on ice a few years ago putting out the bins nasty broken wrist, surgery had to have a plate put in, physio it took me nearly a year to get to normal. It’s given me the fear so I avoid ice as much as possible.

Yak trax are amazing. I love mine. I have a spine condition that means falling over would probably mean I need surgery again so I am very, very cautious when it’s icy and I never slip at all wearing my yak trax even when the ice is very compacted and slippery.

I always walk on the road or wherever there is fresh snow, rather than ice.
Get some walking poles. They look more 'fitness' walking rather than a walking stick, but provide additional support and reassurance on icy grounds. You can even buy a basket for the bottom, so they are more like a skiing stock.

I have ankle boot style wellies with a good grip on the sole - perfect for walking the dog in the snow and ice.

My Yak Trax were my lifesaver on the school run. I have terrible knees (prone to dislocation 🤢) so can't risk slipping.

I was thinking about them last night as it's been years since I've done the school run, and we've since moved and I don't know where they are! Shock

This clip keeps me indoors now. I won't leave the house when it's icy anymore. Not worth it as my legs would turn to jelly and I'd only progress in inches along the path anyway.

I wear trainers. Sounds silly, but they work. 👍

InfoSecInTheCity · 22/11/2024 17:19

When it gets icy I stick a pair of cheap socks in my handbag. Thick/fluffy ones work best, the type with lots of fibres that will stick to the floor when they freeze. Just put them on over your shoes. They don't last long so you couldn't use them for a 3 hour hike or anything but they're very effective for icy pavements.

I too took a tumble this morning, stepped out onto my drive and careened onto the pavement..... somehow managed to bang the back of my head but fell on my front... not leaving the house until it clears up. I hate ice.

Yaktrax are brilliant!

goneaway2 · 22/11/2024 19:36

Which version of Yaktrax? I walk my dog for 1-2 hours per day. Would I need the pro ones?
