Doctors are ignoring me due to my age

This year I have had some strange things happening, my family are convinced it's perimenopause or leading to it.

I will say I'm 33, my mother my aunts and my grandmother all started theirs early to mid thirties, my family also start the actual menopause really early.

I had a smear the other day and voiced my concerns, I've had purple period blood which I didn't even know was a thing, the nurse told me it could be from my copper coil...which I've also never heard of happening.

I'm constantly on the verge of tears or I'm horrendously angry and shouting, I'm a happy go lucky person, no stressed and very chilled but everything is setting me off. My periods are weird, they're going every 3 to 5 weeks and one is super heavy and lasts ages then one is very light and lasts a couple of days. I've had the down there dryness that has been sore, my weight has been up and down, forgetfulness, hot flushes 😳

I've managed to get a telephone appointment for a couple of weeks in the future, is there anything else I should mention? It just feels like nobody is interested cos they assume I should be older for this.

I think you should go to a specialist. Don't waste time with the GP

PoupeeGonflable · 22/11/2024 07:55

Get the coil removed

MyOpalViewer · 22/11/2024 07:55

but aside from mentioning your period to the nurse during your smear… you don’t say you’ve ever actually spoken with a GP about it

I have the copper coil so it doesn't contain any hormones etc, would copper really cause this?

OP posts:
MyOpalViewer · 22/11/2024 08:02

have you actually been to the doctors about this op?

If its turning your periods purple then it can't be doing great things for your body. Too much copper in your body isn't a good thing

It can cause bleeding irregularities
Might be worth giving the Family Planning clinic a ring before your GP appt.
They can be tricky, annoying little bastards (coils, not GPs, (altho,...)), esp if you've had it for a while

The nurse also said purple blood can be a sign of peri, I hadn't even known before that purple blood could happen

you didn’t say she said it was a sign of peri in your Op!! surely that isn’t ignoring you?

coffeesaveslives · 22/11/2024 08:08

You need to push your GP for tests.

What other symptoms are you having? I recently saw the ANP for this exact same thing and I had a blood test the next day.

Mine turned out to be a hormonal imbalance which led to a PCOS diagnosis but I was taken very seriously and listened to. I'm 35 if that helps!

I have never heard of purple period blood either. 😔 you definitely need some blood tests doing to check your hormone levels

He said mention it to the nurse which is exactly what I did, as I've had pnd before I find that they won't always listen to me that well without thinking I'm being dramatic, it does get very tiring. I've asked to see a different guy this time around that was great with an issue my son had so I'm hoping he'll actually take me seriously.
I have a 7 year old

Yup, I had a look on Google and didn't find much about it being from the copper coil to be honest, she said its usually a sign of a big rush of estrogen

I don't really think I could afford that unfortunately

you’ve not been ignored

doc said speak to nurse about it
you spoke to nurse and nurse said could be sign of peri. So acknowledging that it could be peri!
so you’ve booked another doc app

monstermuch · 22/11/2024 08:12

I had a really rough time with copper coil. mirena on the other hand - amazing. I think peopel think the copper will be the 'safe' option but I always found it made my periods and pain awful.

I've heard about Mirena before but wasn't sure, I was a little worried as was on the pill for years but it made my blood pressure sky high, previously was told Mirena wouldn't do this but was scared to change when the copper coil has always been totally grand for me

Could you see a female medical professional?
