Does this throat look ok? (Horrible back of throat pic)

DS has been ill all week, high temps of over 40c, not eating much, sleeping lots, not even been on his PS.

Took him to the docs on Tuesday, diagnosed viral tonsillitis, said to watch and wait and to come back if gets white blisters as then will be bacterial tonsillitis.

He's no better and I think his throat looks a bit lumpy but they're not white blisters. Does he need to go back or wait it out a bit longer? He's wasting away before my eyes.

Apologies for the horrible pic! I've lost all
sense of what's normal.

I’d take him back to the doctors. You don’t want that getting worse over the weekend.

I’d take him back - also maybe they should rule out glandular fever too? Not sure what age range he is though and whether that makes a difference. Everyone I’ve known who’s had it has been teens

Thanks

He's 14.

I've just never seen him like this, he usually bounces back a lot quicker.

He is saying his throat is really hurting, he's having paracetamol. Gone right off his food, which I think is a mix of painful to swallow and feeling nauseous.

Alternate paracetamol with ibuprofen, and give him cough medicine (or honey) to help his throat too. I'm not sure he needs the doctor - just more home treatments.

Is there a possibility it's glandular fever? Only saying because my DS is recovering from it right now and his symptoms were exactly the same. Are his neck glands swollen? There is a blood test for it.

He will survive without food for a few days, so try not to worry about that. The main thing is that he can drink something, even if not as much as usual.

Was he prescribed ABs when you went before?

tonsilly · 21/11/2024 19:10

No she said to watch and wait to see if he needed them.

I'll see how he is tomorrow.

Thanks all.

I remember having the most painful tonsillitis a few years back and someone suggested gargling and swallowing dissolvable aspirin- and it seemed to really take the edge off. Not sure if it is suitable for your DS but thought I would mention it.

Can you just try soft foods - soups, apple purée, smoothies, icecream? The cold foods may initially sooth it too
