Heating on or off when WFH

Teachymummy · 21/11/2024 08:51

I'm WFH (studying) today and looking for what most people do with regards to heating when WFH. It's just me rattling round in the house until 3pm.

Heating has been on 2 hours already and I've just turned it off and it's 14 degrees inside (-1 outside).

I want to leave it on all day tbh but it's so expensive (large house). No working thermostat so we manually turn it on and then off again.

Currently wearing a vest, dress, thermal tights, normal socks, slipper socks, slippers, a cardigan and oodie. And hot water bottle and flask of herbal tea. But I'm cold!

Got internal doors closed and curtains open to let the sun in.

Is it just one of those things that Is part of WFH having to put heating on?

I could drive to college and work there but it gets noisy in the library and then there's the cost of fuel and parking. Plus roads are like an ice rink here

Heated blanket all the way

Imisschocolate17 · 21/11/2024 21:27

Heated throw - it's a game changer! Absolute bliss and no need for any heating if just you in 1 room with it. Completely warms you through.

I don't have the heating on during the day at all now thanks to it

OnlyTheBravest · 21/11/2024 21:34

I can't work in the cold, it makes me miserable and unproductive. I just use the money I have saved by not going to the office on heating costs instead.

mollyfolk · 21/11/2024 23:00

Oodie and a hot water bottle on my lap. We have the heating on in the morning and the residual heat means it would be 18 for most of the day.

Your house sounds freezing. Is there anyway you can improve the insulation. Even tape on the windows sides or other small things.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 21/11/2024 23:06

I had it on a lot today, I justified it because I shouldn't have to be freezing in my home and by getting two loads of washing dried on airers and radiators (hung one lot up before starting and the other on my lunch break WFH monitors, I also worked 13 hours yesterday way beyond my contract so they get plenty out of me)

I've stayed strong so far & not had it on but I must admit my toes, nose & fingers were cold this week. I'm thinking of getting a heated blanket.

You don’t have your heating on? What does “stay strong” mean in relation to putting heating on? It’s November and has been freezing in the UK this week. Why on earth would you choose to freeze working from home, can you not go into the office if you can’t afford to heat your home while working in it? I never understand this race to bottom to putting heating on in winter on MN, it’s madness! No-one will die thinking “oh I lived a great life, I stayed strong freezing my arse off in November WFH”

To others on this thread why do you all sit and freeze? Would it not be more beneficial going into the office to work rather than live bundled up in layers wearing fingerless gloves sat crouched over a keyboard wrapped in a blanket to work? It sounds like Scrooge on here a lot of the time tbh.

ByRoseMentor · 21/11/2024 23:09

On obviously 🤷‍♀️

Dallasdays · 21/11/2024 23:49

Heating off and a heated throw from Amazon on my lap. Lovely and toasty and cheap to run. Total game changer. Please get one!

TheChosenTwo · 21/11/2024 23:54

Mine clicks on when it drops below 21 in the rooms downstairs and 20 on the top bedroom floors (except ours, that’s set to click on when it drops below 17).
I will not be cold at home.

Justfortonight34 · 22/11/2024 00:07

This thread makes me sad - I live somewhere which is relatively warm throughout the year, but we have cold spells (having one right now), and while I love my oodie, I can't imagine not putting the heating on if it's cold because it costs too much (energy costs here are capped at an affordable level). Warm hugs to all who are cold xx

Jingleballs2 · 22/11/2024 00:14

DH works from home and the heating is on all day every day 19-20 then 18 at night. Who wants to sit freezing all day 🥶

Mamabearsmile · 22/11/2024 00:15

It's not just the house but the air temperature that matters. Anything under seventeen starts to impact upon the immune system. Below fourteen serious risk to health of the old and the very young and the sick, below ten for any period of time repeatedly, this is the place fatalities occur. As an asthmatic I struggle with anything below seventeen and attacks are more frequent. I have degenerative arthritis of the spine and that is just terrible in the cold. One stiffens so and the pain increases. Just got to keep up the warm drinks and covers throws. I often sit in my down jacket or pj's and dressing gown. I've renamed them warm j's. Bought ones with hoods. Primark do a fairly affordable range. 13:00 for knee length hoodie and pockets. Feel like a ninja grandma with the hood up....

fivebyfivebuffy · 22/11/2024 00:19

My house dropped to 15 today so I ended up putting the heating on to 17 as it was too cold being sat down all day

Copperoliverbear · 22/11/2024 00:38

What @twointhemorning said.

Yeah I don't get this either. Obviously you get the odd few who are in genuine poverty and cannot afford it, but lots of people seem to do it just because they are tight! I had a friend at school whose parents were pretty well off, and they never had the heating or hot water on! I** absolutely hated going to her house during winter, it was utterly miserable.

Then there are the people who won't put it on if it's only them in the house. As if they aren't worth it and it should only be on for the benefit of their spouse! Bizarre. If you are working from home then of course you should have the heating on!

Ladyof2024 · 22/11/2024 01:13

Thermal underwear, and the heated blanket powered via USB plugged into your computer.

SundayDread · 22/11/2024 10:38

I tried not having mine on all day the other day. I was fine but the house dropped to 13 degrees and it never really warmed up again. It was then cold all evening despite having the heating on full.
so now I have it set to 16, it’s sunny today and I must say the house is warm. It’s not on that much but it’s stopping the house getting too cold, I’m still wrapped up. I think it’s a false economy to keep letting the house get cold.
It’s much warmer this weekend here anyway.

FannyCradocksDoughnut · 22/11/2024 10:40

Get a heated throw. Game changer!

Redcrayons · 22/11/2024 10:51

Heating off mostly.
for me it’s a mix of clothing, Ive gradually built a selection of thermal long sleeve tops, wool jumpers and fleece lined leggings, Supplement with my hot water bottle and an electric throw, which keeps me warm.
I have an oil filled radiator which I switch on if I’m still cold, that’s usually when it’s below 5 outside.

The house heating comes on at 430pm so the rest of the house is warm for when I finish at 5pm.

DancingLions · 22/11/2024 11:47

as I don't want to heat a whole house for just me in one room

People always say this but what would you do if you lived alone? Never have it on?

I wfh but am moving around the house all day on and off. I don't just sit in one room all day. DS does also wfh now so we just have the heating on, although I did the same when he wasn't. If I'm sitting here earning the money for it, I'm not going to sit here and freeze!

I don't really keep up with the news on gas prices, but I have a payg meter so I know from that when it's higher/lower and it's definitely got cheaper than it was a couple of years ago. I've had it on most of the day (at 21) the past few days and it's cost me £25 for the week. At night I leave it at 16 so I know it's kicked in at night a few times while it's been freezing. And I'm in an old victorian place with single glazed, sashed windows. Hence why I don't let the temp drop too low or it takes an age to warm the house again.

I actually don't think that's terrible. Especially as all summer I was using pennies on gas. I barely topped it up. Obviously it's different if you're on the breadline. But my commute used to cost more than £25 so I'm ok with it. It's only for the coldest weeks.

allmybooksarefromthelibrary · 22/11/2024 12:00

Off, unless DH or I are so cold one of us snaps and it goes on. It went on off this morning at 9 as usual, and I'm currently sat in bed working in a patch of sun so really toasty!

I imagine it will go on at some point later.

wizzler · 22/11/2024 12:03

We have the heating on until the children go to school and then in again at 3pm when they come home

I wear turtle doves gloves as I can type in them and they keep me warm

If it's really cold I'll put the heating in for an hour or so, but try to manage without.

Resisterance · 22/11/2024 12:12

I have an oil filled heater which sits next to me. I don't put the house heating on other than for an hour at lunchtime Also wearing thermals and a wool poncho on top of my clothes.

K0OLA1D · 22/11/2024 12:13

I have mine in a cool room set to 17. If it ever drops below that it ticks on. The rest of the house is warm.

Turn it down to 2 in about March so it never comes on
