Is therapy for PTSD worth it?

If the trauma makes you physically unwell when recalling events (eg chest pain )?

Or is it better to not relive the experience ? Does anyone have any experience?

@Geneticsbunny

Thanks for your message, my situation is a little different to yours. I had poor mobility to begin with and my anxiety has really impeded it further and it's a real struggle. I wonder if EMDR would help.

EMDR was hellish to go through but very successful for me.

I think one or two posts have mentioned CPTSD, and traumatic memories from very many years ago, and I just wanted to express a word of hesitancy about the capacity of EMDR to deal with that.
I'm sure that there are cases where EMDR has been very helpful to people with CPTSD but my understanding is that, on the whole, its ability to deal with CPTSD is limited. If there are very many, very fractured half-memories of traumatic events from childhood EMDR is unlikely to be anywhere near as helpful as it can be for single, recent episodes of trauma.

@ValleyClouds only if you have PTSD. Otherwise it won't really help.

Another recommendation for EMDR. The process was difficult, but the results were worth it.

I second the note of caution about EMDR for long term CPTSD.

It's easy to loose an awful lot chasing the idea that just one more adjustment might make some positive difference.
"You just need a more skilled practitioner" or "adjustments to the treatment path" are the standard response to it not working.
No one says this may not be suitable treatment for you.

It becomes a spent cost fallacy with the costs being mental anguish, sleep, time, and money, and a long unraveling of the self in search of being 'cured'.

The pain in my chest, dizziness etc that EMDR and was supposed to help reduce, significantly worsened. Regardless of what underlies it, it's AF.
If you're experiencing pain, get it checked separately rather than seen as an inevitability of the process of deep seated CPTSD.
