Casting on in knitting

Can anyone recommend a Youtube video of how to cast on or can any of you explain it very clearly to me? There are so many videos it's hard to narrow them down so I'm rather hoping someone can point me straight to a good teacher.

N.B. Arts and crafts do not come naturally to me so I need it explained like I'm an idiot 😉

There are quite a few different styles of cast on! I generally use the long-tail cast on. It's quite hard to explain it without visuals. I'm going to try and find a video...

What are you about to start knitting? Smile As just said, there are loads of cast-on methods out there and some are more appropriate for certain things than others. Think if you need your cast-on edge to be very stretchy (like for the cuff of a sock, for instance, or the neck of a top-down jumper).

Having said that, I tend to use a long-tail cast-on for virtually everything as I tend to forget the others! Grin

P.s. I wasn't a natural crafter and definitely needed things explained like I was an idiot. Now I can knit Fairisle jumpers, crochet enormous blankets and spin my own yarn on a spinning wheel Smile

Aww - love your username, @GlomOfNit !

Have a look for Purl & Jane either her website or YouTube and she should have a video. She has a local to me wool shop and also runs classes, I've found her to be an excellent teacher, really clear at explaining things

My Favorite YouTube teacher is "Very Pink Knits". She has regular speed and slow-mo videos and jumps straight into it with no 'influencer' crap.

If you're just starting out, look for the 'knitted cast on' and 'long tail cast' cast on to get started.

Thank you everybody!

@GlomOfNit I'm only knitting a square so I can practise knit stitch and purl (sp?). My tension is on the nutty side but I'll worry about that once I can cast on and can knit and purl consistently.

@AllProperTeaIsTheft that's reassuring!

I shall try later on tonight. I might be back with more questions...
