I caused chaos on the road this morning

Chucked it down with snow overnight and my car was covered in snow. I cleared the windows and drove off to go to work. I got to a roundabout where you can turn left, go straight on or turn right (as you do on roundabouts, I was going straight on) and there was an avalanche on the windscreen. I'd forgotten to clear the roof. It covered the windscreen and the wipers were jammed and I couldn't see a bloody thing.

I had to stop the car and get out and clear it off the windscreen. I was in the left lane, so anyone going straight on or right could still get by. A man behind me with a moustache and a trilby hat on started honking and shaking his fist because I had delayed him by about, ooh, 90 seconds.

Feeling a right fool. Trilby Man looked like someone out of a 1970s sitcom.

Or use a broom?

Legitimately tried this. The car has a step to climb into it, I use it every time.

The broom sadly didn't work.

First world none problems for me 😅

Ewock · 19/11/2024 12:30

You absolutely should have cleared the roof. People saying my car is too high, tough figure it out. It can cause accidents which are preventable. In my town people have been stopped by the police for not clearing their cars properly.
It's not rocket science that it's dangerous not to

thebigchangeishere · 19/11/2024 11:46

That's why you must always clear your roof. It can be really dangerous if you don't.

Indeed. Last time it snowed heavily here the police were stopping and fining people who hadn’t cleared the snow off properly.

ClicketyClickPlusOne · 19/11/2024 12:15

Fair enough.

It is also fair enough for people to point out WHY it is important to clear the roof, and @Bowlofhotslop I HAVE seen a cyclist come off their bike due to ice flying off a roof. Luckily not badly hurt , but that’s why I’m being ‘over the top’ about it.

But I don't think the OP needed to be told WHY. It says in the OP that she "forgot" and what the outcome was. The multiple posts about what a terrible thing it is to not clear snow properly are just people being smug and superior.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 19/11/2024 12:29

I am glad to have the reminder to check my roof for snow before driving off. I haven't had to deal with snow for about 35 years so may not have thought of doing that.

I don't understand this at all. Unless you drive some sort of monster truck, it's at eye level isn't it. How can you possibly not notice?

Nope, didn't happen, never happens

Christ, people on MN are weird about stuff like this. They forget people are human and mistakes happen. OP posting this has probably reminded loads of people about the need to clear the car roof of snow. It's not like snow is a common occurrence in the UK and we have this issue often.

Nope just that it's not acceptable to forget. If you are driving a car etc you are responsible she could have caused an accident. Luckily didn't but 'I forgot' is not a reason!

Pretty easy to do if your mind is on other things. You could be looking right at it, but not see it because you're off somewhere else in your head.

Obviously the snow on the roof was dangerous and needed clearing, but I'm laughing more at the man in the trilby hat anf moustache... I have an image I can't unsee now! 😅😬

Christ MN has changed recently. No sense of humour

True of most of the threads on here recently .

Have you never forgotten something important in your life?

If you aren't focused then don't drive a multi ton vehicle that can kill people.
British people are so blaise about driving and being dangerous on the roads

Perfectly possible to focus once you're in the car.

Not that could cause danger to others no. I'm surprised so many people have, when driving a car you have to be aware

SirChenjins · 19/11/2024 12:33

That's the last time you'll make that mistake, I'm sure. You were very lucky it was just a peep you got, it could have been a lot worse for you and others.

We get quite a lot of snow up here and it's one of the things the police regularly warn about. I have an SUV and am five foot 1, I use a broom and that gets the snow off. It just becomes a habit when it's been snowing - clear your windscreens, your side windows, your mirrors and the snow on your roof and bonnet. Tick, tick, tick.

Well yes, but it's an accident. Nobody is perfect 100 percent of the time. Nobody's saying it's an ideal thing to have happened.

Genuine question - what good does saying that "forgetting is unacceptable" do in this situation? Do you never make a mistake? Do you think that it's generally better for people to admit to an error than say nothing because they're worried about people having a go?

The OP's honest post may actually act as a reminder to someone in future and has likely done more good than all the posts castigating her.

Ewock · 19/11/2024 12:37

But it is preventable and should not have happened. It's basic car maintenance which so many people seem to be lacking.
We drive dangerous machinery and yet so many people don't understand how to maintain it safely.

A real life saint! We are lucky to have you on this board!!

Unfortunately, most people are just mere humans, and occasionally make the odd mistake.

But we're also humans and sometimes humans forget. I actually gave up driving because I hate it so much, and I agree people are so often dangerous on the roads, but it's clear this was an accident., What does berating OP achieve?

Of course I make mistakes but not with a car. I just can't fathom how people don't understand that they are driving heavy machinery capable of easily killing (in a worst case senario) so make jokes. I honestly don't get that 🤷‍♀️

Stretchedresources · 19/11/2024 12:39

You're meant to clear your car of snow. Really stupid to forget to do it.

How does that work on a Defender when you're 5ft tall.....?

I got my 6ft 3 husband to do it.

I'd never drive without clearing the top of the car of all the settled snow. Glad no one got hurt OP.

Folding step, my dear.
