HOW to make pram more visible in the winter?

Bristolnewcomer · 19/11/2024 11:18

I mean - it is visible but it’s also dark grey and I have to walk beside quite busy roads in the dark. What is out there? Have googled but not found much. Considering a giant light up Santa on the hood at this point.

Self adhesive reflective tape maybe?

shellyleppard · 19/11/2024 11:21

Hi vis vest/jacket draped over the hood of the pram??? Or as previous poster said reflective tape.

MizzMarple · 19/11/2024 11:23

I put battery powered fairy lights around the hood (making sure the batteries aren’t near the baby) and/or a bike light attached to the belly bar thing

Expletive · 19/11/2024 11:26

Back in the early 1960s my father fitted bike lights to my pram because my mother had to push me down unlit lanes in the dark.

SkaneTos · 19/11/2024 11:27

Reflective products for prams/strollers.

thesugarbumfairy · 19/11/2024 11:57

any kind of lights - fairy lights, bike lights etc.

AlwaysFreezing · 19/11/2024 11:59

You can buy loads of reflective things nowadays. I have put reflective badges on my kids coats and bags. Or the reflective arm bands that runners wear around their bag handles. Both would work on prams. You could even get reflective wheel spoke gadgets.

But bike lights are a great shout too.

ConstructionTime · 20/11/2024 00:58

Reflective bike spokes are so pretty! 🙂

I don't think there are many products especially for prams, but you can widen your search for reflective items for pedestrians / bikers + bikes, runners and adapt from there. Check sport equipment stores and online (for example amazon).
There are also dangly reflectors to add to bags and jackets; you can probably add them to the pram as well. The fact that they move helps with being better visible because it is more eyecatching. Probably good to attach reflectors to the pram on all sides and to yourself, too.
I'm happy that you are planning to use lights or reflectors because I still see so many pedestrians in dark clothing crossing the streets in short distance to cars, and probably not realizing how little they can be seen in bad weather / darkness.

This article from a road safety authority said that without a reflector, people are seen from a distance of 30-50m, but with a reflector, the distance grows to 150m.

I bought reflective things for walking my dog! I have adjustable straps with reflective stuff on them. I normally have 1 around my arm and another on my waist. They would go around the pram handle or possibly around the hood/cover part. Sometimes I've seen them at aldi/lidl when they have pet week on.

Bristolnewcomer · 20/11/2024 12:48

Thank you SO MUCH I've wondered about this for ages and thanks especially @ConstructionTime for that article.

Reflectors are a good thought - are battery fair lights bright enough to see?

Yes to this - we’ve wrapped reflective arm bands around the pram.

To be properly visible to everyone (whether drivers, cyclists, joggers, pedestrians or kids on scooters), I think you need a combo of lights, reflective and hi vis.

Nomafsforme · 20/11/2024 12:56

Veloviz do reflective stickers for bikes which they say are also suitable for prams. Lots of nice colours/designs

Marblesbackagain · 20/11/2024 13:08

Pop along to a bike shop I used to find them very helpful lighting up my outn about. A couple of rechargeable lights a reflector tape should be helpful.

Making sure you are well lit up with a hi Viz etc because your height will mean you are seen before the pram.

skilpadde · 20/11/2024 13:33

I have tassel reflectors from this shop - https://www.shop-firefly.com/firefly-reflectors/

I second the recommendations for using reflective tape as well.

Consider getting something like a cycling jacket or rucksack that looks silvery-gray in daylight but is wholly reflective at night... it makes you impossible to miss.

Reflective items are going to be way more effective than something like fairy lights.

This. Save it for if you get a scooter/bike when they are older

BlueChampagne · 20/11/2024 14:32

The purely reflective cycling jackets are just a dull grey jacket in cloudy weather. A high-viz vest with reflective stripes will be more effective, cheaper, and go over whatever else you decide to wear.

Definitely look up accessories to make cyclists/horse riders more visible. Fairy lights won't be enough to see by, but a decent bike light will.

GonnaBeASuperSaver · 20/11/2024 14:33

What about the glow in dark snap bands kids wear on their wrists a few over handles maybe by front wheels

ConstructionTime · 20/11/2024 19:29

@Bristolnewcomer Reflectors are mandatory in winter in a couple of Nordic and Baltic countries. That is probably the reason why there are more articles on them from these countries; and they publish them in English, too.

If I remember correctly, the school children receive these for free, and they are probably handed out during a couple of awareness-raising days, too.

For both adults and children, instead of a new jacket, many seem to wear a hi-viz "rhombus"-format of gear, which you just drop over your clothes and have a reflective "V" at the front and back, like this < >.

If there is a reflector without a clip, unlike the ones from firefly, I often reassemble them with old keyrings or hooks, so that they can be changed quickly between different bags or coats or between different people.
In any case, whatever you will invest in now you can use for many years to come, from pram to kids bike (or your own bike) or cart, and on many different clothes or (school)bags, as pp pointed out, too.

Thanks - high viz is a good idea and I have a light one for summer but in winter I’ll need to wear my big winter coat. High viz hat??

This is such a timely thread. I just saw that the new uppababy vista v3 has got reflective components all built in already. I've got the older v2 and it made me think that I should make mine more visible for winter. Especially on the nursery run to collect the older one. Will investigate some of these ideas as well!

I do have a wooly hat with a built in rechargeable 🤠hat. .

I have reflective stickers designed for bikes/scooters, plus LED lights designed for runners. Mine are rechargeable via a USB cable, you can get ones with button batteries. I wear one around my bag strap too (I don't put one on my arm because it would be a faff taking it off every time I take my coat off).

I like the accessories from Proviz Sports for being effortlessly visible. Husband wears their stuff for running and he basically glows in the dark!
