dentures or implants help me decide...

Hi,
I am in the process of having to decide what to do with filling space from missing premolar and molar so 2 teeth.
If I go with implant then need a sinus lift so it can be packed with bone material first.
Or do I go down dentures route and if so does anyone know best ones to go for.

Concerns for me are I often get sinus headaches(usually on opposite side but still....) I have read that sinus lift surgery can make things like this worse which is a huge worry for me.

But then also read if I don't go down implant route then it can result in bone loss in surrounding teeth so cause future problems which is also a worry.

So I feel torn between chancing making sinus problems worse if I go for sinus surgery or bone loss if I go for dentures.

Anyone have any advice???

I have a plate with three back teeth. I can do without it, but I usually wear it. It doesn’t need fixative, but it loosens if I forget and eat a toffee or something. Yes, there’s plastic on it, but you get used to it quickly.

I would have considered implants if I had the £6,500 I was quoted, but that wasn’t possible, especially as I had three new crowns. I expect the plate will need replacing at some point, but a few hundred is very different to a few thousand.

I have just had the first stage of an implant fitted today. With a bone graft. I had the tooth removed just before lockdown and never got around to having the implant which I was planning. Then I had to have another tooth out a few weeks ago. First out was bottom left molar and other was top right. I had to have the bone graft today as I’d lost so much bone. I really didn’t want any type of denture and the dentist advised against any kind of bridge as it can damage the surrounding teeth.

I went down the implant route as my MIL has been having problems for years with dentures due to bone loss. They never fit right. It could be that she just hasn’t persevered with them but she says it’s down to the bone loss.

The dentist I’m going to is a specialist and seems really good. It’s not cheap though. £6.5k for the more complicated implant. Hoping the other one will be less as it shouldn’t be as complicated.

I got an implant for a front tooth in 2015. Had to get some bone added. (Sorry - can't remember the terminology.)

It's been fine so far.

@Sonolanona, would valplast be suitable for 1 missing tooth (upper 5th)?

Sonolanona · 19/11/2024 23:19

Fixmymouth It's not on a plate of any sort, it is literally the missing teeth (two) and a thin bit that looks like natural gum on either side, There is a tiny clasp of the same transucent gum coloured material that fits ontpo my canine one saide and the back molar the other....you can't see it. You honestly can't tell it's there and it's very comfortable.
I AM considering a bridge at some point soon, simply because I have stupidly managed to lose two valplast dentures because I take it out at night for gum health and I have managed to lose them, but one of my friends has a single tooth one and hasn't lost it in 8 years, so that's just me.
Glassheart1 It would be very suitable! There is no plate, no bulky stuff and no denture fixative needed!

Thank u @Sonolanona, I will ask the dentist at my next checkup 🙂

my brother is a dentist and he always says that implants are no better than other, much cheaper methods

fixmymouth · 20/11/2024 20:23

thanks for all these messages. A lot to think about and do some more research about possible issues and maybe the valplast which sound as though there is less risk.

I also have valplast flexible dentures, mine are 2 teeth together on the top set. I was paranoid they would be like 'old people' dentures!, but they look brill and feel natural. No one can tell the difference and they just clip onto the joining teeth. No need for fixing paste and no metal in sight!
