If you work remotely...

...what do you do?

If you want to know why I'm asking:

I am trying to find a new job with more flexibility.

I work in a school atm and am thinking of retraining. I'm not a teacher but have classroom experience and a degree from a v well respected university, plus quite a lot of experience in corporate admin jobs during my pre-dcs career.

Looking for inspiration as don't know what to retrain in

Thanks 💐

I work in HR, and am in the office a maximum of 1 time a week.
It isn’t the job role that really dictates how much you can work from home, it is the company culture (broadly speaking, USA based companies with offices in the UK tend to be more office based - as the Americans have not really adopted the hybrid/home working style).

Oohdoboreoff · 19/11/2024 09:07

Thank you, that is helpful to know

Also HR. Funnily enough I do work for a US company! But we don't have offices in Europe yet.

Agree with it being around company culture. Previous workplace, everything could have been done remotely from IT to Sales, but they were sticklers for 4 days in the office per week.

Some non-student facing roles in universities WFH most of the week (admin / HR / Finance /)

I'm a head of customer success

I work in payroll. Full time over 4 days after having my daughter in 2022. 100% from home and have been since March 2020 when covid began. Can count on one hand the amount of times I have been into the office. I know I'm very lucky and don't take it for granted!!

Legal advisor for a charity

I do cybersecurity and have not worked in an office since before Covid came along, there's just no need as I can work anywhere with a computer. One of my direct reports is currently visiting family in another country and has taken her laptop so she can work some of the days and save her leave.

Non clinical NHS. 100% WFH since covid.

I work marketing for the news industry and have worked from home for over 12 years now. I was originally a PA exec in the same news corp - international. If you have good admin skills and have worked in education I'd look at board clerk roles within the educational sector and also government LE authority. This typeface with give you good flexibility and pays well. One meeting f2f a month or so..

mrsm43s · 19/11/2024 10:28

Do you need/want fully remote or would hybrid work? Are you looking for a job or looking to retrain into a profession?

Perhaps something for the local authority in their Education dept? Having some in school experience would no doubt be advantageous. Plenty of admin/project jobs or things like Ed Psych. which would need significant retraining.

SunQueen24 · 19/11/2024 10:29

Local authority.

Quality compliance for global pharmaceutical company. WFH 3 days a week.

thesugarbumfairy · 19/11/2024 10:44

I'm in IT. We are expected in the office a couple of days a week, but nothing set in stone. I'm in the office now actually. Clearly working hard 😂

Beezknees · 19/11/2024 10:49

Customer service for a big 6 energy company. Hybrid working, 2 days in office and 3 at home. Need a thick skin though.

DazedAndConfused321 · 19/11/2024 10:54

Not working currently but was a business development manager for a few years, both employed and self-employed and only worked remotely, except a couple of events I chose to attend.

Customer service, some admin and a lot of digital marketing type jobs are typically remote.

JC03745 · 19/11/2024 10:55

A friend does proof reading. He has a job doing the role from home, but as a side line, reviews secondary school and uni papers for students. I know he did several courses and think there is an association of proof readers.

Civil service have several roles WFH- but really depends on the team.

Breadsauce77 · 19/11/2024 10:59

95% home based.

Highly specialised professional role, I have nearly 20 years experience and have worked in my company for over 10 years so I have a decent amount of leverage when it comes to asking for flexibility!

Breadsauce77 · 19/11/2024 11:00

Just to add that new joiners to our company would be very very unlikely to get the same deal, unless they could bring something really unique & valuable to the table …..

Oohdoboreoff · 19/11/2024 15:01

Thanks - some of these are really useful.

@Breadsauce77 your last post made me laugh. The "..." after saying "brought something really valuable" read like "....unlike you" 🤣 . I'm sure it was not meant that way, but the pure snark the way it read made me laugh.

OP posts:
Breadsauce77 · 19/11/2024 16:18

@Oohdoboreoff i wasn’t being snarky. I think certain companies want people in the office but will make exceptions for roles that are very tricky to recruit for, require special knowledge or very very good candidates.
