Beef wellington or Rib

Icanttakethisanymore · 18/11/2024 21:13

I’m trying to decide what to do for Christmas Day - is beef wellington worth the extra faff or would rib of beef be just as good? Beef wellington feels like a nicer centre piece but is it worth it do you think?

It depends on number of people. Rib is much easier for larger numbers as it is not so time critical.

Rib of beef all the way. Less faff and more tasty with better gravy and leftovers.😋

Rib of beef is fantastic. As a pastry and beef lover I should adore Beef Wellington but I've never had one that reached more than 'meh' levels to me. And I've tried!

Same here.

Rib its special

Agree with pp. I wouldn't bother going to the expense of Wellington. Unless you're going to cook fillet steaks to order for each individual, rib of beef all the way.

Thanks all - it’s for 8 adults. I did a wellington years ago and I wasn’t that impressed with what I managed so I think probably rib is the way to go.

I usually do honey roast carrots / parsnips, red cabbage, roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese and some kind of sprout dish. Any favourite side dishes anyone can suggest?

Rib for me too - beef wellington can’t even compete at the same level!

WildWildWestCoast · 18/11/2024 22:24

I've done Beef Wellington every Christmas for over 25 years. I'd get run out of town if I did anything different!

NigelHarmansNewWife · 18/11/2024 22:31

I've done beef Wellington from scratch once. It was perfect so my worry is I'll never be able to recreate it! Rib of beef is just fabulous and doesn't take long to cook.

Norzilla · 18/11/2024 22:42

I like beef wellington personally and if you get the tail end you can end up with some more done than the middle which can work.

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 18/11/2024 22:42

I'd much rather have rib!

I’ve done it once and it was mediocre! I do love it when done well though

Yorkshire puddings, obviously.
Which means pastry is definitely not necessary.

Personally I'm not so keen on rib, prefer a rolled sirloin - easy to cook (get a slab of fat from the butcher to put on top to self-baste and provide plenty of dripping for thee roasties and Yorkshires) , doesn't waste oven space with bone, easy to carve. Expensive but if you can get good beef it's excellent.

I couldn't agree more! We've been having it for a few years, now, none of us much like turkey. 4 ribs for just over 80 Quid last year.

Beetroot makes a brilliant accompaniment to roast beef. I roast it with garlic, thyme, red onion, olive oil and balsamic.

All the usual Christmas sides go pretty well, except pigs in blankets are unnecessary and I don't usually make stuffing. I make Yorkshire puddings, of course. DH likes cauliflower cheese with it so I oblige (he's lucky I love him so much 😁😉)!

Beetroot is a great idea! Thank you

Oh, you've just reminded me that I haven't done roast beetroot and parsnips for ages. I do a honey and mustard glaze.

Another vote for a good rib, as much I love a good wellington, rib pips it.

FelixtheAardvark · 20/11/2024 10:04

Wellington. Best meal I ever ate in a restaurant was Beef Wellington at the Four Seasons Restaurant just outside Oswestry.
