Nostalgic snowy/winter day meals.

So, as it's snowing where I am, and I knew it was coming...I've made a giant pan of lentil soup. This was what we always had as kids when it snowed or got really wintery.

Also colcannon, veggie cottage pie, or a meatless hot pot. I remember smelling them all cooking when I'd walk up the garden path as a child, kitchen windows fogged.

I also love just big thick pieces of toast with loads of butter and a hot cup of Yorkshire tea. Preferably mid afternoon or late evening when it's cold, the fire is warm, and you just want to warm up from inside.

What's your go-to as soon as the weather goes super cold? Even better - when it's snowy? An extra point if you've a favourite activity! Mine is wrapping up with a book or a boardgame once I'm suitably warm.

If you hate winter, please don't have a bun fight. It's light hearted and nice!

Yay! That's fab. I'm always worried if I recommend something Grin
My lovely dad treated me to this today so I'm going to be looking for more soups (he said my old one looked like an electrical hazard)

We had toad in the hole for supper tonight. Perfect for a chilly night.

Hahaha same here, sitting there hoping I've not accidentally poisoned someone. 😂 Oh that looks brilliant! Those stick ones are the best I think, they make the soups creamier! I broke my big blender a few weeks ago (one of those plastic jug ones) by pouring in soup when it was too hot because I'm impatient!

A soup that I made by having nothing at home, and now everyone wants it, is a load of frozen peas, frozen spinach, sweetcorn. I fry an onion and garlic with some ground cumin, then cook all the veg up in some veg stock (or water with a stock pot thing), then whizz it. It's really fast because I don't stew it for ages but weirdly comforting. It shouldn't be nice but it works! Nutritional yeast is good for fast soups too, or a teaspoon of Marmite for background!

@Gorgonemilezola You know what, I've never made toad in the hole. I'd love to try that! Is it easy?

Suet is a meat product so not vegetarian but I think you can now get alternatives.

Atora have been doing veg based suet for years. I’m not vegetarian but use it and don’t notice any difference. No one should miss out on dumplings 😁

The best for me is putting a pot of "Hameen" stew in the slow cooker on Friday night (a Sephardi Jewish dish for Shabbat with potatoes, onions, carrots, boiled eggs, tomato and spices) then coming into the house after a cold walk home from synagogue on Saturday morning. The smell is incredible!

This week is the first time this autumn/winter that we're doing it.

Also partial to a chilly park walk and coming home to hot chocolate and a film with the children.
