My poor, sore, raw nose

Soursop · 18/11/2024 19:35

What is best to put on my nose for soreness caused by heavy cold nose blowing? Nose is still streaming and I'm using a billion tissues so it's only going to get worse. Waah

You need to dry up your nose. Pseudoephedrine (NOT PHENYLEPHEDRINE) will do that. Ask the pharmacist. They made it hard to get because you can use it to make Meth.

Blarn · 18/11/2024 20:38

Lanolin, the kind sold for nipples when breastfeeding or Lanolips lipbalm. It stays on much better than vaseline.

Epwell · 18/11/2024 20:45

neutrogena hand cream

I'm the same at the moment op and I've been plastering my nose and lips in paw paw aloe balm in the tube.

Brilliant stuff

Unpopular suggestion here, but I just sniff.

We're designed to sniff. The whole nasal cavity is designed to drain mucus backwards down to our stomach acid. I don't do it in public, I just do a few hearty sniffs at home, then squeeze or dab a runny nose in public (no blowing).

This method dramatically decreases the irritation of the nose altogether and I don't get nearly as snotty - because I'm not constantly irritating my nose.

Vaseline or some other type of barrier cream.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 18/11/2024 20:55

Honestly? Use lipsalve on your nose. Someone told me this years ago and it changed my life.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 18/11/2024 20:56

I swear by the yellow nappy cream. Metanium I think it’s called. Any skin
irritation like you describe and in whack that on.

teraculum29 · 18/11/2024 20:56

i'm on the same boat.

lip balm or vaseline on your nose after every use of tissue

GrowAndGreen · 18/11/2024 20:58

Neals Yard Wild Rose Beauty Balm work for me.

Thetrickcyclist · 18/11/2024 21:00

Bepanthen nappy ointment is also good, or lanolin nipple cream, or calendula skin salve ointment (Nelsons or Weleda I think - it does sting at first but it really soothes, I use it overnight and my nose is always much better in the morning). Balsam tissues are better than normal tissues as well

I do this too, it’s a game changer.

Nomafsforme · 18/11/2024 21:46

Cotton handkerchieves instead of tissues makes a massive difference.

BESTAUNTB · 18/11/2024 21:47

Another vote for lanolin nipple cream, which is great for chapped lips too. It was recommended on the Style & Beauty board a few years ago and I’ve used it to good effect since.

TheCosyRain · 18/11/2024 21:50

High quality balm tissues. Treat your nose very delicately dabbing rather than hard wiping. And baby bum cream works wonders for me. Bepanthen really soothes and hydrates

Cece92 · 18/11/2024 22:02

Throughout the day stick Vaseline in between blowing to give it a barrier but I recommend aveeno for night. I use a moisturising serum as part of my skin care, a layer of good old Nivea followed by aveeno especially when I have a cold or in this cold weather. And a layer of Carmex for the lips xx

buttercupcake · 18/11/2024 22:04

TheFlis · 18/11/2024 19:41

Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream is the only thing that saves my nose when it’s like that.

This, I’ve just had a cold and this was amazing! So soothing and moisturising.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 18/11/2024 22:07

Nivea handcream can sting like buggery, as can a lot of other moisturisers.

I def swear by lipsalve in the day, then a huge slathering of sudocrem for overnight.

bellocchild · 18/11/2024 22:09

Nisita nasal ointment if your nose is sore inside too. Available on Amazon.

Isthisonme · 19/11/2024 07:11

Bepanthen nappy cream

DeathMetalMum · 19/11/2024 07:31

Bepanthem nappy ointment works really well. I use it in the day time as it isn't coloured when applied so not as easy to spot as sudocrem.

CherryBlossomFestival · 19/11/2024 07:41

Ar bedtime, put a bit of screwed up tissue in each nostril to stop the flow, and moisturise with the thickest, most soothing cream you have. Looks stupid, but by morning it’s much better.

Late to this thread but for anyone Googling — another option worth knowing about: Narwhal Nose Balm. Quick disclosure: I'm the founder (Mumsnet rules!), so take that on board. It's UK-made (London), push-up stick format, beeswax + peppermint + eucalyptus. A lot of my customers are former No-Sor refugees — the green pharmacy stick that got discontinued. For people who like Happinose for the decongestant feel, this does similar essential oils + soothes raw skin too. Mostly though I'd echo the Kleenex Balsam tissues advice from earlier in the thread — that change alone is half the battle.
