Please help, Clumps of hair falling out

My hair has been falling out loads lately, there is a seasonality to it so I wasn't overly worried at first but it's not stopping and getting worse. Tonight I ran my hands through my hair in front of DH and clumps of it were falling out, he couldn't believe it.

I'm now so worried I've left it so long and about what may be causing it.

Has anyone experienced this? I'm 39 and I usually have thick luscious hair, I can definitely notice how flat and thin it now is.

Please tell me this will pass or is reversible 😥

Start with blood tests.

Could be a thyroid issue or peri menopause to name but two.

It's unlikely to improve on its own, so ring your GP tomorrow and start from there.

Please see your GP asap - get full bloods, start iron and vit D and try to get a diagnosis. I have alopecia universalis which came out of nowhere 18months ago - always had long curly hair, never thinned or never a patch. Within two weeks, all my hair fell out in clumps, followed by brows/lashes and all body hair. It’s never come back. There is a new NHS treatment available if it is alopecia which looks promising but it’s not easy to get hold of; but if it’s patches, you could try immunotherapy or steroid injections. I hope it’s just low iron or stress but please get it looked it because you might be able to stop it progressing so much!

Unless you've recently had a baby and this is the natural moulting following pregnancy as we don't shed as much then you need a GP appt and a blood test.

I had this last year due to menopause

Thank you I will ring the GP tomorrow. My anxiety has really ramped up the last few months and I seem to be in fight or flight mode most days with it so I wonder if the heightened stress has to do with it.

It doesn't seem to be patches, it does feel like post pregnancy- where you start off with so much hair it makes sense to lose some but we've gone way past that stage now and I now have less hair than ever. But it does seem to be all over, not a particular patch.

I noticed this myself starting in September, ridiculous amounts of hair every day when I washed. Then I got seborrheic dermatitis on my scalp.
I think it's part hormones (I'm 42) and part a really stressful few months.
I've got blood tests and a dermatologist booked next week (privately).

I had this with Covid and now again this year- I think stress and possibly perimenopause. When we say chunks we might mean different things but I had extremely thick hair, now I’m not at the fine stage but definitely not at the normal stage either. Best of luck op

Menopause or low iron Can be the cause or a whole manner of things like autoimmune disorders

My son’s hair fell out because he was iron deficient due to Coeliac disease

Def get your GP to test your fumerate levels - this is a separate test than iron. The range for fumerate levels at the GP is huge (mine was 3-300) but you need to be close to 70 for healthy hair.

Ive had major fall outs three times due to very low fumerate levels. Most recently, my hair as also falling out in clumps and def felt thinner. I did a private fumerate test to confirm, then started taking ferrous fumerate pills, with VIT C and lysine. It lasted about 5 weeks but has been dramatically better of late.

Were you ill a couple of months ago? When I had norovirus a few years ago my hair fell out a couple of months later. Apparently illness can cause a break in hair growth and as it moves to the surface a couple of months later it falls out. Then the new hair growth comes through, and gradually goes back to normal.
