Restaurants near the Colliseum in London for dinner please, not too touristy if that's even possible!

What's your budget? Any favourites/really can't stands?

Inheritorssum · 17/11/2024 22:49

Budget is probably up to £50 per head I guess. Looking for somewhere a bit quirky, I hate those sausage factory for the theatre type places. No real dislikes apart from French or Indian - not so keen. ..

Fancy dinner: the Portrait at the National Portrait Gallery, which is about 2 mins walk away, if you are dawdling. www.npg.org.uk/visit/eat-and-drink/portrait-restaurant/

Stupidly cheap and delicious, not fancy at all: Wong Kei in Chinatown. (This is the one furthest away, but still not very far.)

Upscale coffee ship that sells actual nice food and booze: Notes, which is a couple of doors down from the Coliseum.

I’d have a look at Bacone, Barrafina, Din Tai Fung.

Also a place called ‘The Yards’ which has a Burmese place (Lahpet) and new Middle Eastern place (not v authentic but food nice - brother Marcus).

All manageable at £50 a head. Barrafina a bit pricier.

Thank you all so very much!

Eat Tokyo, in the street behind Colliseum is an authentic Japanese cafe food. V cheap but often has queues.

The National Portrait Gallery place is good too

Larry’s is very nice and definitely within your budget https://pepper.dynalinks.app/daisygreen
It is less than a five minute walk away from the Coliseum.

Ave Mario Henrietta St

SouperWoman · 18/11/2024 00:15

Omg do not go to Wong kei’s - traditionally the rudest and worst restaurant in China town - if you are happy to walk from there, lots of good alternatives on Newport street.

JennyWreny · 18/11/2024 00:21

I have really enjoyed BéBé Bob a couple of times recently but that's no good unless you like chicken! It might also stretch your budget - depending on what you order.

Also second vote for Ave Mario but probably need to book.

someon · 18/11/2024 00:40

Luci
Le Barb
Temper
Della Terra
Thai pot
Bancone i would book
the others I've just turned up and got a table but it depends on time of year.

The waiters being rude is one of the traditional attractions of Wong Kei! (They sent their waiters to hospitality school a while back, which disappointed everyone because they were polite for a bit - but happily it wore off soon enough.) Look at it as dinner theatre and its a feature, not a bug. I wouldn't have it any other way.

(But on this occasion I think one of the National Portrait Gallery restaurants is probably the way to go )

Some soho suggestions: Eat Tokyo. Delicious, authentic, affordable sushi, sashami and bento. Big queues so arrive early.

Hoppers - insanely delicious Sri Lankan food. But if you don't like Indian then maybe too similar.

Viet Food on Wardour street. Really good vietnamese. Tasty cocktails. Nice atmosphere.

tobee · 18/11/2024 17:04

If you do go to Wong Kei it's cash only.

Lots of Chinatown restaurants are not bookable but that may not be a problem

Inheritorssum · 18/11/2024 17:56

Not mad on Chinese, absolutely love Thai though , any decent ones nearby?

There is a tiny pub around the corner called the Lemon Tree which also does Thai.
Our favourite pre, interval and post Coliseum Wink
